There’s a story on page three about how appalling it is that Gordon Brown approved some new (rather nice looking) designs for British coins meaning that Britannia will not appear on any British coin.
Anyone know when she last did? The pre 1970 old penny?
There have been lots of 50p designs without Britannia. The most noteworthy has to be the one issued during John Major’s time with a design to commemorate the completion of the European Single Market – probably done to wind up the ‘bastards’!
Good point. Only had commemeratives in my pocket when I wrote that. The DE of course was bleating on like ever coin out there had a design going back to Alfred the Great.
The new coins are great, but i’d be pretty pissed of if I was Welsh. I don’t understand why it’s the Scots and Northern irish who always raise the most fuss about independence as it’s clearly the Welsh who get treated the worst.
The designs were supposed to represent the constituent nations of the UK, except they chose the Royal Coat of Arms which has no Welsh symbols on! The worst thing is as a choice, it has 4 quarters, but strangely represents England twice!
Maybe though it’s not because they’re not a bunch of miserable wankers like the others though who allow themselves to be blinkered by populist demagogues who’d happily ruin their economy and international standing for a bit of power by playing to the peanut gallery and reducing their GDP to that of Macedonia.
By breaking away I mean from the UK. You know all Alex Salmond cares about is getting in a history book as some sort of William Wallace style culture hero, and Gerry Adams is pretty much the same but with an even more vicious and racist edge.
Neither care that it would ruin the country in the case of Scotland, or the vast majority don’t want it in the case of Northern Ireland.
Aww boo! I had been waiting patiently for the Express headline to be put up because I was waiting for a massive “ANOTHER WHITEWASH” underlined with regards to the Diana inquest/
Steven – Wales (and possibly Scotland) would be worse off financially in ‘breaking away’; the flipside is that England would lose out on a huge number of public sector workers, as well as recruits for the armed forces.
As for the coins, it looks to me like another example of the “British identity” the Government seems keen to impress on us at the moment – the pledge of allegiance, 2012 Olympics, etc. Whether this gets anyone to *feel* British as opposed to Welsh/Scottish/English/Polish/Sri Lankan/Al-Qaedan is anybody’s guess.
Can I just bring this to everyone’s attention? Express journos are going on strike!!!
It’s disgusting in 3 ways.
1) They are demanding above inflation pay rises – something they slaughter ‘greedy workers’ such as MPs for doing.
2) The paper won’t pay them – something they slaughter other ‘greedy corporations’ such as the NHS for not doing.
3) They claim it will be impossible to continue creating accurately and professionally sourced material on such low pay! WHAT THE FUCK!?! This coming from a rag that had to print an apology for inventing stories last week?
Jesus fucking christ! These people need to try actually doing a real job for a change, instead of complaining about a job that already pays actually a pretty good amount for not that much work and a very low standard of it to boot.
The irony here is that the management have said they “cannot insulate the staff from the wider effects of the downturned economy”
Would that be the economy you all helped royally fuck up by encouraging daily the rampant house speculation that caused people to snap up cheap credit in a panic to buy houses they couldn’t afford from money grubbing millionaire investors?

Steven – perhaps the under-representation of Wales is to do with it being a principality? That’s why it’s not on the Union Flag anyway.
I’m sure the Express journalists will be really hard to replace if they choose to leave. It’s not like their jobs could be done by just about anybody else – oh no, wait . . .
Let’s all hope the strike is a long one. However, it would be easy to replace the DE journalists.. just go to any branch of Argos and cast a large net in there.
