Call to arms

Posted by Merk

January 9th, 2009

The horrible Melanie Phillips’ blog is one of many nominated for the the 2008 Weblog Awards. This is the same horrible woman who loves nothing more than to stir it up with her Daily Mail ramblings and books with loaded titles such as ‘Londistan’.

Melanie Phillips’ is pretty much head to head with Created in Birmingham, a site dedicated to linking Birmingham’s Artistic and Creative Communities. A great site run by and for some great creative and nice people. It’s a been a real close call for a few days now and there is a week of polling left.

As someone who believes in democracy if wouldn’t be right for me to suggest that you lovely Mailwatch readers should vote for CiB on the grounds that your ever humble host is a Midlands boy and that we all hate the Daily Mail with a passion and it would be awful for this hurtful woman to win the award.

That said, the polls are open till the 13th and you can vote again every day. Here’s the link http://2008.weblogawards.org/polls/best-uk-blog/ :)

p.s. let us know if you voted.

I voted. I hope that vile hag Melanie Phillips sh*tting well loses. ‘Londonistan’ is such a witless book it even quotes The Daily Express as a source of information.

  2. Sharon

Thanks for writing about this. It’d be a shame if that source of so much misinformation and bigotry won an award.
I’ve voted for the other blog and will do every day.

  3. Rex

Voted. :) BTW – Love the slick new look.

  4. Sarah

Mel Philips is a mixed bag. Sometimes she makes a bit of sense, most of the time she’s hysterical and spends half her time ranting about liberals.

  5. Matt Hurst

I’d probably vote for anything that encourages creativity, most of Mel’s stuff just creates tension.

  6. Rob

Yeh just voted for CIB. Winning by a nose atm.

  7. Minneythekid

Just voted as requested. Never even been to Birmingham but hey……

  8. Zagrebo

Most luncatic fringe-figures sometimes make a bit of sense if you remove things from context. Phillips’ apologists tend to highlight valid points she occasionally makes and ignore the flood of conspiracist, extremist nonsense that informs most of her opinion. The simple fact is that the woman’s views are largely irrational and informed by prejudice, occasional superstition and frequent conspiracy theory. She is not a serious political journalist.

    Done

  10. Original Paul

Voted. I went to the NEC a couple of times, does that count?

  11. aljardi

Just voted CiB. What else could a Midlands guy do? Certainly not vote for that Philips woman that’s for sure.

I voted. I used to live in the Midlands so it’s legit as well! ;)
Looks pretty close though, need to keep voting.

  14. Antigherkin

Don.e Looks like CiB are just ehad of Mad Mel, so fingers crossed.

  15. Kiz

I just voted for the CIB blog. I’ll do anything to help Mailwatch stop such a nasty piece of work winning the award. Good news though-when I voted, CIB had a 1.2% lead over Melenie Phillips! Keep this up and it’ll just pip her to it! I’ll go back on there tomorrow and vote for CIB again. Thanks for letting us know about this Mailwatch!

  16. Kiz

By the way, I’m from the Midlands too-I live in Leicester. Therefore, I feel even happier about voting for the Created in Birmingham blog. Keep voting for it!

  17. Rob

It’s really close – CiB just in the lead – but only just! Keep voting!!

  18. Rob

God all this poll watching is like the bloody US election all over again…no sleep for me then.

  19. Dai

    Just voted.

  20. OMR

Think I voted. Cashews right? definately the best nut…

  21. Citizen Smith

Consider it done every day until the end. To work comrades!

  22. Kiz

Yeah, you’re right Rob. It really does feel like that! Out of the 2 leading candidates, you really desperatly don’t want one of them to win and the other one must win!

  23. Minneythekid

Shit! She’s winning! Think some trolls may have seen our efforts and are attempting the same for her. Swines! Its only 0.03% difference so we can win it back. Get voting!

  24. Minneythekid

*correction: its 0.3% (or about twenty votes)

  25. Ned

She’s well ahead now – no doubt she’s mobilised her minions. Keep voting people.

    Done.

Normally I refuse to do this kind of thing as it’s a bit of cheat really isn’t it? But the thing is you can be sure that there’s a right wing site out there equally stuffing the ballot by asking their readers to ‘not let this liberal, PC gone mad, waste of taxpayer money, multicultural socialist group’ win, so I voted in the interest of fairness and balance.

Whoa! Nice shiny look, like it very much. Was a tad concerned that all last week I couldn’t cheer myself up with viewing the latest outrages from our favourite turdloids as I kept getting that troublesome ” forbidden” message that made me think that the IT lot here at work had finally stopped access.

    Oh yeah… Voted!

  36. Tom

Would it not be an idea to publish this on the anti daily mail pages on facebook?

  37. Mail Man

    Voted.

Positive creativity before negative paranoia any day of the week.

  38. Will

Hell yeah! I voted. I hate that Melanie Phillips and her smug self righteous bigot attention seeking drivel.

  39. scothmist

Hi I voted for mel thanks for letting me know about it.. looks like your shite will win this useless prize . hope it makes you self righteous gits feel better. I’ll be watching you watching me ha ha.

  40. devolute

A convincing argument and ‘CiB’ looks pretty good actually.

    Voted.

  41. Railroad Man

Voted. CiB is now a full 5% ahead.

  42. daveyp.

Forgive me for being pedantic, but the title of the book happens to be ‘Londonistan’. ‘Londis’ is a chain of minimarkets. I sometimes buy my booze there. And the book in question warns about the relentless rise within England of Islamic radicalism, which is every bit as bad as fascism and every bit as much a threat to democracy. AND they’d stop me buying booze…from anywhere.

  43. James Russell

I live in Birmingham and hate the Daily Mail and everything it stands for.
Guess what I have just done?

  44. hel

mel phillips thinks that the legal & medical definition of death accepted worldwide (brain death) is a conspiracy… how can anyone take her seriously when she comes out with stuff like that?

  45. MatthewS

Hel: does she really? Could you link me please? Considering she thinks vaccines are evil and global warming is a myth that doesnt surprise me somehow!

  46. George

God, that mental old bag’s a case and a half, isn’t she? Can see the point somebody made above about at least being able to admire her “Balls” though. It most take some to spout that much horseshit and appear so comically proud of it!
