No-one cared when it was kept to a country made up of mostly poor people. Oh yeah, and a country full of MEXICANS.
Looking at it statistically for a second; it’s killed 80 people in a country with a population of almost 110million. I’m as worried about this ‘global catastrophe’ as I was about bird flu and SARS, both of which were labelled by the media as harbingers of doom and judgement.
“KILLER PIG FLU” is actually more accurate than “Swine Flu” – the express at least implies it is one particular strain of “swine flu” rather than the normal version that has always been in the UK.
I wondered when the tabloids would start with this. They could go two ways.. 1. point out it’s only two people (and they probably haven’t got it anyway, and even if they have we know how to treat/cure it) and for everyone to calm down, or 2. print ‘WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!’ and invent ridiculous estimates of the deathtoll,
Just an interesting historical nugget – the last flu pandemic in 1968 killed about 38,000 people worldwide. And that was in a time when disease control and epidemiology was in it’s infancy.
No. You can’t have ” Pig MPs with noses in trough”.
Not now that Brown went completely off script and spoiled the propaganda party by producing a new Bill scrapping most of the ‘allowances’.
Cameron & Clegg sh*t a brick and refused to go along (they knew their MPs would choke on such a slashing of their dosh)…..leaving them exposed for the opportunist hypocrites they are.
You can bet that the tory press won’t be going near that story again for some time.
Hmm.. 1968 flu killed about 1 million people, not 38,000. It killed 33,000 in the US alone.
Still not many, compared to the global population (but it would suck to be one of them).. however I could imagine similar numbers this time if the disease ‘escapes’ into the general population (most people in this country would get antivirals.. but what about those in poorer countries, and those that say ‘its just a cold’ and stay at home) – whilst it’s still a few isolated people who’ve just got back from mexico it’s easy to contain.

You see, at least he Mail had what it was actually called. When the Express gets a hold of it. gets the Maddy McCann treatment…..KILLER PIG FLU!!”
Although I am smirking at the sentence structure. ‘KILLER PIG’ would be far more reason to panic.
120m people dead worldwide? That’s still only 2% of the global population anyway- even if that estimate is correct.
Should have used the headline “KILLER PIG FLU HERE” for shits ‘n giggles.
Oh wait, that’s not their style.
Love the byline “2 People in hospital” – Surely the start of a Worldwide epidemic!
@Sarah

Ummm, Is the terrifying headline designed to put off people from taking the Express offer of a European break
Cue comments like ” Pig MPs with noses in trough”.

I see they went for 2.
2 people in hospital…. Bloody hell well the NHS isn’t being used nowadays.

@ Dai
My point is that it’s a massive generalisation. People would know what the Express was talking about if they said Swine flu.
Sorry over-reaction. lol

Is it even worth booking a cheap holiday then? Maybe not if you have to spend time with ‘Express’ readers………..
@ Tony
Yeh sorry i noticed that pretty much as soon as i wrote it, but you can’t edit these post
That’s all well and good popping into the church to get married but how much is their house worth?
Did they think their readers wouldnt understand what animal “swineflu” came from?
