The frontpage on the Mail I have today is telling us that crime in the UK is worse than South Africa and the US. Predictably (is another James Slack masterpiece) its brought in the ex-pats from SA, the US etc. bemoaning the horrible existence we Brits have here due to our lack of guns and Nu-LieBoor…

i would have gone for “eternal sunshine of the semi-final” myself.

the mail’s website must have screwed up, it initially said that he would be released. they changed the story but left the readers’ comments.

  4. Consignia

Heh, that headline almost reads like a threat.

Classic Mail hypocrisy. He’s a criminal and criminals should be locked up and the key thrown away according to the Mail. So why is it treating Biggs like some sort of hero whose misdemeanour is as trivial as not taking his library book back on time? I bet if Ronnie Biggs’ skin colour were somewhat darker the Mail would be saying he should be banged up for at least 1000 years.

I agree Biggs should not be released – I hate the way the Great Train Robbery has been so romanticised. They left the train driver really badly beaten and he never recovered from the trauma. Biggs went on the run for years and lived it up on the proceeds, and has never done his time for what he did – plus he’s never shown any remorse. I’m pretty liberal when it comes to crime and punishment, at least by Mail standards, but on this occasion, I think prison is the right place for him, and we need to stop glamorising him and his fellow thugs.

I think it was the sentence the Mail called for when the robbery took place.

  8. Antigherkin

    Surely they called for hanging?

  9. Mail Man

It would be interesting to see which stats they are using to make this claim.

I’d also love a look at the logical leaps & flipping they are having to do when ’socialist’ controlling Europe with it’s comparatively ‘liberal’ courts and lefty tax-heavy economics manages to end up more at peace with itself than Thatcherite Britain (even if Blair/Brown wasn’t as extreme about it as she was).

I wonder why they always look to keep floughing along the route that is the failed traditional Anglo/US approach and yet despite quoting this sort of story they never seem to make the connection that a more European approach to running our society would give us far more beneficial practical effects.

From a simple design point of view, this is an awful front page. The layout is terrible! Four different stories crammed in there, all competing for attention, plus a big banner advert at the top.

Their design team need a rocket up the arse.

The Biggs thing is crazy, especially the comments of his son, lawyer etc. The lawyer was on tv this morning going “oh yeah, well when Jack Straw was a student at Leeds he was deemed a trouble maker! Perhaps he should think about that”. Seriously, what? Biggs was part of criminal conspiracy that stole and awful lot of money and, according to wiki, left a man with “constant trauma headaches for the rest of his life”. He ran out on justice and hasn’t served anything like his sentence. This is a classic case of punishment and retribution as advocated by the Mail, what’s the problem?

  12. Lazarus

Perhaps we could have a whip round and buy Mr Bigg’s lawyer a nice poster for his office?

Sorry to piss on your parade Boris, but the article is comparing the UK with the rest of Europe, not the world.

Yea, but knife crime, who gives a fuck eh?!?

  14. mr mordon

Plus, I think folk are reading a little too much into the main headline

  15. DBC

So a ” Titanic Effort” by Andy. We all know how that story ended . I imagine Andy will sink tomorrow in the semis when he comes across the iceberg that is Roddick

  16. Matt Hurst

Apparently aren’t crime figures measured differently country to country?

That’s what was said in the final sentance in the the express today after anyone and everyone had put there two pence in. Maybe Britain is full of crime, but if the figures are not on the same level across the board then how can they possibly correlate.

  17. TonyB

How does the Mail know that he won’t die on an operating table having been removed from prison for major surgery? Have they hired a hit man to finish him off next week?

  18. Jay

    No mr mordon

The mail story actually said the UK had a worse crime rate than the rest of Europe, the USA and South Africa.

  19. Stevie H

Surely if Biggs keeps eating statins, he will live forever (and not get cancer)?

  20. Chris

String ‘em up, it’s the only language they understand

I like a lot of stories on the front page. You can see what the news is better. In my opinion the Mail should be more like the Telegraph and less like the Sun.

    predictabely, more Dail Mail churnalism.

To update, it was a survey done by the tory party themselves.

And is completely ridiculous. To clarify, Affray and things like that aren’t even deemed violent crimes in South Africa or America, or anywhere outside of Europe.

The only reason Britain came ahead of them is the basis that the tories were counting crimes, that aren’t consituted as violent crimes anywhere outside of the EU.

As an example, America has 10X as many murders per person, per year than the UK. South Africa is about 20X

    same story for GBH

  23. TonyB

WILL die in jail. Wrong again, Mail!
