the 65,000 number is, as previously mentioned, a worst case scenario. The predictions (which btw are completely pointless and serve no purpose whatsoever apart from to scare people) are based on everyone’s favourite pseudo-scientific method – computer modelling, which is completely arbitrary and based only on the numbers which you put in. The data entered was based on experiences in previous flu pandemics. This time the elderly seem to have some kind of immunity to the virus, probably from an old flu pandemic. However the 65,000 number came from estimates which include the elderly being affectred by the disease – since the elderly are usually disproportiopnally represented in deaths for seasonal flu, it would be unsurprising to see a larger number if the elderly are included in the data.
