I think its the Mail fighting for the benefits the middle-class apparently don’t get. Most comments talk about how they get nowt in leftist Britain but conveniently forget about child benefit, tax credits, the heating allowance and bus passes (among others). And as we can see cutting welfare is fine in Mail-land unless its the welfare of hard-working middle-class people…
Middle class millions don’t need the right to free travel (and guess who’s paying for it all), but at least ‘female’ has a sparkling new look. And by sparkling new look I mean a pink font. They’ve even managed to make the typeface patronising. Good work that editor. What next, glitter and stars and money off Hannah Montana DVDs?
Grrrr! The Mail’s new mod-minimal approach is proving typically disingenuous – of the 7 posts I’ve attempted this week, all have triggered the auto-reply (’click on the link in your email to validate’) but, er, I’ve not had any emails.
Looks like I’ll have to acquire another address or two
(Totally unrelated to the front page I know: I just wanted to share)
The free bus pass for over 60s was introduced by this Labour Government a few years ago and grants have been given to local authorites to implement it. Tory councils are complaining the money is insufficient. The free pass is very popular and is worth a lot of money to poorer pensioners. The Mail is spreading this nonsense, probably to prepare the ground for its withdrawal if the Tories win the next election. I have already seen letters from people condemning Gordon Brown for taking it away. They seem to think it has been there forever. Bloody idiots.
Just a moment to remember the assertion that “Biggs WILL die in jail” (Mail July 2). Evidently not, according to the latest news. And they slag off weather forecasters for getting it wrong.
I actually wouldn’t be too hasty to support means tested bus passes just because the mail is against them. I do, however, suspect that they have turned it into an anti-labour diatribe, when free acces to public transport is surely a leftwing goal.
“Biggs WILL die in jail” – no, that would always have been unlikely, unless an incredibly hardline political party who don’t believe in medical treatment for the incarcerated somehow got into power. The biggest probability was always that, free man or convict, Ronnie Biggs was going to die in a hospital. Which I expect him to do within days.
“Middle class millions could lose right to free travel” – erm, good? Why on earth would they need it?

Don’t you know Antigherkin, the middle classes (especially those who are white male) are the most oppressed group in today’s society! The Daily Mail constantly says (or implies) so so it must clearly be true!
It is tragic to think that if their enormous 4×4 runs out of petrol, they might have to pay up to a quid in bus fare to get to the nearest garage. Oh, the humanity!
I am surprised to see Maddie on the front of The Mail after all this time. Surely this would go down better with Daily Express readers?
If means-tested bus passes were introduced for people with bugger all money, I suspect that The Mail would bury it on an inside page. With this front page they’re simply giving their buffoonish readers what they want: a good chance to get a bit riled.
My Mum’s a middle class pensioner/widower and she wants to have her bus pass revoked because she thinks the money is being wasted and that old biddies are just abusing the privilege. She’s far from rich, too. She also reads the Daily Mail and shouts at me when I try and say anything negative about it. like, y’know, it’s really a version of Chat – but more insane.
I’m past caring what “class” I am, but I do get a free bus pass because I have a medical condition which prevents me driving. I’m already pissed off because, unlike in Scotland and Wales, I can only use it in off peak hours (I can’t drive at any time). For once, I’m with the Mail, although maybe from a slightly different angle. If the bus pass is means tested, I expect for them to do the same for driving licences.
Can I get a bus pass because I can’t drive then? Presumably you’d pay for your own petrol for your car. I can’t afford either petrol or car which kind of makes any classification of my social status rather pointless. I’m broke class.
Yay – Maddie’s back!
Seriously though, is the news that bus passes will be means tested really the most important piece of news?

Would these be the Bus Passes that The Tories plan to get rid of if they get in anyhow

surely being middle class means you can afford a bus pass anyway!

A dig at social workers and some old sh*te about bus passes.

Who’s that kid? I don’t think I’ve seen her before.
