    Phew…

    Not having a family means i’m not going to pay then?

    How is Anne Robinson the antidote to TV ageism? She’s spent enormous amounts of money trying and failing to look young when she would look far better without doing so.That doesn’t sound like someone prepared to age gracefully.

    i fully agree with the above comment.

    in addition, because it’s what we’re all thinking of:

    A nice bit of scaremongering there. It’s not like businesses pay taxes too. No, let’s just add up some numbers and divided by the number of ‘families’ and scare them all. Now if I left the UK tomorrow is Gordon Brown going to come chasing me for that cash? No. It’s bollocks.

    @Mr M,

    My thoughts exactly the moment I saw the sub-headline. Oh the joys of being a childless singleton.

    I always bleat on about Europeon Social Fund at work, but that along with the national Mimimum wage has basically saved Cornwall from Disaster in this recession.

    Having left the UK for France, I can’t wait for my windfall. I was considering travelling across to Dover and knocking on doors to collect the £257 in person. But, with the EU doing the job for me, I’ll just relax and listen to the cricket on the radio (and to think, I don’t even pay the licence fee)

    Well, this money is out of taxation, taxation we’d have to pay to fund similar operations closer to home if we were out of the EU anyway. It also doesn’t take into account how much the EU benefits the UK in private money i.e. unified regulations across the EU brings in businesses and capital from elsewhere, never mind that immigrants pay more in taxes than they receive in benefits too.

    There’s a question about this on today’s have your say text thingy on Teletext- the question’s very leading, asking if you’re happy for everyone to pay an extra £250-odd to the EU; some people think that this means that everyone individually will be charged this exact amount when of course, the money will just come out of general taxation.

    Having said that I’ve got my doubts as to whether the EU is good value or not.

  10. James M

    Ah yes, here’s the question from Teletext:

    “Every home in Britain will have to pay £257 more to the EU each year, but do you think it will be value for money?”

    What a crappy question!
