Clearly the more accurate headline ‘Very small fringe group of hardline Muslims demand Sharia Law’ couldn’t fit on the front page. Much better to pretend it’s Muslims in general that are demanding it!

  2. Dai

I’d suspect that the “now” is a bit much as well. A very small fringe group of hardline radical muslims have always demanded Sharia Law.

It’s like writing “Now Vicars demand more tea!”.

    Nonsense.

  3. Andy

Anjem Bloody Choudary again, who’s been such a gift to the BNP (and lazy, soi-racist newspaper editors) that you almost supect he says these things to order.

Prediction. If it goes ahead, we get the spectacle of a few dozen grumpy, confused, disaffected fundies holding their demo, while the Old Bill keep them seperate from a few dozen grumpy, confused, disaffected nutters of the EDL and BNP while the rest of us just think it’s all a bit funny.

  4. finlayson

What’s that picture on the bottom-left of the page? Is that where Express editors are planning to live once sharia law is introduced, in a little house on top of a pole?

  5. Adam

It looks like Nelson’s column with a small house and the flag of an Islamic nation (I can’t tell which). I think they’ve actually gone properly full-blown deranged.

  6. Original Paul

It’s a “NOW” story so it is not true.

  7. Fruitbat

Muslims comprise 2.7% of the UK population, and this group are a minority within that minority. There ain’t jack shit going to come of this.

  8. Sarah

Oh dear it seems like the Express forgot the word “Radical.”

  9. Stevie H

    “Now Christians demand:

    KILL ALL GAYS”

    would be just as (in)accurate.

  10. NJH

Wow, I could buy nearly 17 copies of the Express at Smiths, and pay nothing. My life is now worth living.

  11. Matt Hurst

    It’s not a newspaper its a comic

  12. Tony

It’s better than that – each express comes with a free £5 off… so if there are 1000 expresses in WhSmiths, you could could buy every one of them and have £4,700 change.

  13. TruthSeeker

If you really want to read it the story’s here at http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/134080/Now-Muslims-demand-full-Sharia-law

    A few points:

I think this “march” shouldn’t go ahead because it will upset a lot of people

I seriously doubt 5000 muslims will turn up. More like 5 or 10 given that Anjem Choudary is widely hated by most Muslims

Anjem Choudary only says inflammatory crap like that because it gives him & his band of merry followers inflammatory front page headlines like that.

  14. Stevie H

“Mr Choudary has said that under sharia law in Britain people who commit adultery would be stoned to death.”

    Jeez, he talks some shit.

  15. Tom (iow)

Well I fully expect that to be passed into law any day now if 4 religious extremists are calling for it. That clearly over-rides it being 45 years since the last execution, and 11 years since the death penalty was constitutionally outlawed for all offences.

  16. Andy

Forget my earlier, mildly amused, post. I just found out my neighbour got burgled last night. I’m now a massive supporter of Sharia Law, as long as it hurts.

  17. Fruitbat

“Mr Choudary has said that under sharia law in Britain people who commit adultery would be stoned to death.”

Right, in the same way that Christians nowadays all advocate stoning. The Bible allows a reading that advocates it, and since our society is grounded in the Christianity it seems we can look forward to it after all! I’m sure the Westboro Baptist Church or similar advocate it, and being headline-grabing nutjobs they of course represent the majority and soon the spineless government be sending the police round to arrest anyone who wears clothing of mixed fibres and doesn’t have a cross in their house.

    Boy, isn’t tabloid logic fun!

  18. Neander

Admittedly this is a scaremongering headline. But the left indulge in blatant scaremongering about far-right fringe groups so I don’t mind the DE doing the same about Islamofascists. And as for your claim Fruitbat that Muslims make up 2.7% of the UK population, I doubt that very much and never mind what the official figures say. By my calculations that would give a figure of about 1.7 m. I bet there’s more of them than that.

If only Mohammed’s enemies in Mecca had got their act together and squashed him and his sect flat while they had the chance. The Arabs could still have gone on to develop some form of ethical monotheism, one that valued individual liberty. But instead they and many, many others ended up saddled with Islam. Poor them…and now that Islam is growing stronger in England, poor us!

  19. JSwindle

    Oh. For. Fucks. Sake.

  20. Stevie H

Neander, you’re probably right that the number of Muslims in this country exceeds 2.7m. There are undoubtably some people in this country illegally and it is a reasonable assumption that at least one of them is Muslim. Fair enough, but these are the best figures we have.

I won’t respond to your second paragraph because my religious history isn’t great.

    However :
“But the left indulge in blatant scaremongering about far-right fringe groups so I don’t mind the DE doing the same about Islamofascists.”

This isn’t about right v left, Muslim v Christian, nor even “British” v “Foreign”, it’s about how the Daily Mail (deliberately, IMO) mislead it’s readers with headlines such as this which – upon analysis – are a million miles away from the actual truth, which has been pointed out above. See the “READ THIS FIRST” section in the top-right corner of this page.

Commenting that it’s OK for the DM to run headlines such as this one, based on your argument above, is saying two wrongs make a right.

  21. Opinion Pole

It’s simply insulting that the media spin ’stories’ to such a ludicrous degree. WHO ACTUALLY TAKES THIS SHITE SERIOUSLY??? Surely those with an iota of intelligence can recognise the twisted conceits of The News Media. Then again, I personally tend to over-judge the General Public’s intelligence.

  22. Marcs

I know Choudhary and his followers, (all you could fit in a phone box!) may be well liked but they are infinitely more preferable to the sneering Nick Griffin and his lot. Anyway, Sharia law would give the Daily-Mailers and the rest of the extreme right something to think about! :D

  23. Neander

…Marcs…you clearly have some sympathy for Islam. Many of those who contribute to this site seem to do so, which is rather odd as you CLAIM to be secularists. I wonder what the real agenda is? What always amuses me is when people on this site say that it is ‘racist’ to criticise Islam. I would still criticise Islam if every last Muslim were blonde-haired and blue-eyed. But my words are going to fall on deaf ears round these parts, so to console myself I shall finish off with a further lament concerning Mohammed’s enemies in old Arabia…

…Oh that Abu Sophian and Abu Jahl had been more artful! Oh that it had been the body of Mohammed and not Hamza over whom Henda shook her timbrel! Oh that Zaynab had prepared her food more ‘carefully’ when the prophet of Islam and his companions sat down at her table! Thanks to your bungled efforts the tyrant prevailed and the world has been groaning ever since.

  24. Tom (iow)

A secularist isn’t someone who hates all religions. You can be a secularist and belive in the private right of muslims to follow their choice of religion.

  25. Christo

I think one person, in a radical group that accounts for a tiny minority of the 2.3% of the UK population, who is muslim, wants Sharia Law.

I’m sure you could find a much higher percentage of Brits who want all ethnic people deported.

This doesn’t mean it’s the consensus view
