“More than 1,000 complaints have been made about a Daily Mail column on the death of singer Stephen Gately, the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) says.” from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8311499.stm
I wonder whether they have the guts to wheel out their usual ‘Storm over……’ headline?
Here is an excellent example of a genuinely offensive piece of ‘work’ in the media but I doubt we’ll see anything like the ‘howls of protest’ reported as they had done with the Beeb etc etc.
Not when it’s the DM causing the problem.
I think the blue box in the top right is actually an instruction to Littlejohn himself; they’re telling him to read and perhaps expand his mind beyond the one-dimesional vat of hate that currently occupies that space.
She’s still piffling a line that the inquest hasn’t answered why he died, as Brooker says she isn’t a trained coroner and she has no knowledge of what happened.
Her only other point tis that civil partnerships don’t end up being all loving and fantastic. Why this has anything to do with a untimely death of a person in one is rather strange.
People do die like this………….I know of one person myself who has and it’s offensive to that, it’s offensive to people in civil partnerships and it’s offensive to Gately’s family.
She should resign instead of releasing flippant press releases such as that, lets remember Ross and Brand were not allowed to give there own side, they had to apolgise unreservably.
Loved Oborne’s rant against the Europhiles. Is he actually saying Labour’s economic policy is working and Gordon Brown is a good guy!?! Credit for Gormless McBruin and ZanuLiebour’s economic policies?? Sits a bit strange with the usual editorial drift of the Wail and the gut reactions of yer average comic reader, dontcha think? Or have I missed something?
Moir is a professional journo.
‘Working’ amongst professional editorial staff.
At one of our supposedly less ‘tabloid’ (not that that is any excuse) papers.
You’re surely not buying that pathetic (junior school level) line that neither she, nor her editorial staff, really understood the way what she wrote would be taken?
Pull the other one. That’s a lie if ever there was…..and a laughably feeble one at that.
Especially as the poor sod’s not even in the ground yet (yeah, real respect & care for the relatives there DM, not…..something worth remembering next time they fabricate a tale and lie about their ‘values’ about some imagined ‘insult’ to the relatives of servicemen KIA – it only counts when you’re living a lifestyle they approve of and it suits their politics)
Like I said, more genuine complaint than anything else to the PCC and you can expect it to be completely ignored by the DM
If it’s not one of their fake ’storms’ about one of their usual targets they are not in the least bit interested.
Hypocritical scumbag b@stards being their usual selves.
You’re right that these professional journos should have expected what was to come, but I still think the reaction to her piece is a TAD over the top. Her points were II believe) that civil partnerships are as likely to fail as traditional marriage, and that an opulent lifestyle was to blame for Gately’s death. The first point is not, I think, as homophobic as some have made out; the second point is indeed crass and totally inappropriate, the only defence for it being that Moir’s piece is a social or anthropological reflection on our society (or Ireland’s socierty, I guess). Her job is to reflect on broad issues; it didn’t help that she purported to know why this individual died. She might have been better off implying Gatley was more of a victim than she did.
The editors could have done a better job. It’s a bit like the Ross/Brand debacle.
It isn’t over the top to complain. Firstly, she was out of order, but secondly this is the mail. So they expect us all to join in with any overblown outrage. I for one have complained to the PCC and just like the mail would want I made a point of not bothering to read the article first
Nice to see the Mail not intruding on the grief of children in nauseating fashion – damn, wait a sec…
What credit crunch – is that a quote from Dacre as he buys a multi- million estate in scotland?
The economy recovers, too soon for the Mail & the Tories.
That really is Tragedy Porn in the bottom-right corner.
Oh, goody, a DVD with a classic tale of intergenerational seduction — free with tomorrow’s paper!
Read Littlejohn? I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.
Rothermere: I would if I could piss petrol
What point are they trying to get at? Surely house prices will Boom again, I thought they’d be happy.
Jan Moir is keeping the hate going as per.

I read Moir’s column, and it is a disgrace.
For those interested Charlie Brooker has a worthy and succinct article about Moir’s revolting little vomitted out hateful ‘piece’.

1000 complaints, eh? Approaching a record, huh?

I’m not sure Moir meant to come across as homophobic as she did. She could have made her (admittedly myopic and boneheaded) point better.
Wonder if that front page was the work of the same sub-editor who handles all their Suri Cruise coverage? I’m not saying, y’know, I’m just saying…
