No, but surely they can’t believe the concept of having someone infiltrate somewhere, gain the trust of people and then kill them is anything new in warfare.
I think the kind of war the Mail prefers is where our troops have rifles and the people whose countries we are invading are armed with pieces of sharpened fruit (to borrow a Blackadder gag). I don’t think they’ve really come to terms with the West’s loss of the monopoly on violence, so it just doesn’t compute as far as they’re concerned.
Something I have noticed that a lot of the nationals (not just the Mail) are doing today is using this picture.
The Press Association put it out (along with a couple of others) yesterday afternoon, but then immediately put a kill notice on it, as the MoD didn’t want them released and used and instead provided its own. To me, the only difference is that the MoD’s (of casualties being rushed to hospital and things) is that they’re a lot less iconic than the one above.
It’s still a pretty shitty thing to do, but all the nationals can now just use the “Paper X ran it first” excuse.
Sits badly with me anyway.
“The parallels between 1605 and 2009 are wonderfully compelling. Does this ring any bells? A nation led by a Scot (King James I) with an unfortunate public manner and a knack of making hideous tactical blunders – ‘the wisest fool in Christendom’ – propelled into office after months of back-room negotiations.
Whereas Guy Fawkes was always bound to fail because his brand of Roman Catholic fanaticism was deeply unpopular with most of the British people, a modern-day rebel would do rather better because the vast majority of voters would countenance almost anything to get rid of this squalid, self-interested bunch of MPs.”
The Afghan war is the result of Tory policy when Thatcher and Reagan were sending weapons to fight the USSR, who were actually invited by the Afghan government and were there quite legally. The warmongering Tories have now left the Labour Party with a mess like they did when they sent weapons to Iraq then turned on him when he repatriated the British created country (Tory government again) of Kuwait.
its the kind of war that has been happening for thousands of years
an enemy infiltrates the army and kills some soliders, oh my such a thing has never happened before!!
What kind of war is this? Not like the wars we had in the old days, where we fought trustworthy white people, back in the forties where everything was perfect and there were no problems.
Actually, with the going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s the white people who have been committing the worst crimes, targeting civilians, torture, terrorising the population.
Perhaps the war you supported when it was first launched?
I can’t make my mind up in Afghanistan. If they’re helping the Afghani people to have a better life and a democracty then I say they’re doing the right thing by being there. But I have a friend who went and fought in Afghanistan who pretty much said that they were target practice for the Taliban. We may be over there helping to bring democracy to the Afghanistan but I don’t know if we’re actually going to achieve it. Is there a point in staying there if we can’t achieve what we want to? Either way, I think that we’ll be back in Afghanistan in a couple of years time even if we leave now.
I just want to thank you for posting this image. I lecture to the military on war ethics, and I’d been told about this cover, so I’m grateful to have it to use in a presentation.
Er…the same type of war as a lot of the others?
They have a point, I don’t think anybody can sit back and say Afganistan is going great.
No, but surely they can’t believe the concept of having someone infiltrate somewhere, gain the trust of people and then kill them is anything new in warfare.
My real issue is the obvious fact that the UK and US governments trained the Taliban to do this type of thing in the 1980s.
The Taliban were trained to fight the USSR, and sabotage like this by us and the US.
There have been many wars like this in the past . It’s Gurellia warfare. You’re not fighting armys who play by the Geneva convention.
The only difference is, this time we are on the receiving end
Perhaps the DM would like the kind of war where the enemy were kind enough to line up to be shot? Or maybe where they surrender immediately?
Newsflash: We probably do exactly the same thing to them.. I bet there are British soldiers undercover in the Taleban right now.
Is the DM pro or anti the Afghan campaign?
You’d have thought that supporting it was in their DNA.

Sadly a war like many others

Oooo Critical of the Tories….
Slightly eye-popping article in today’s Mail:
“Would Britain really be any worse off if the Commons was blown up tomorrow?”

Er…like political terrorism?
Mixed messages, DM.

War is a bit shit shocker.
