According to the BBC web site a year ago the spot price of North Sea oil was $52, which at an exchange rate of 1.50 makes £34.67. It’s now $79 and the exchange rate 1.68 = £47. That’s a 36% increase not a fall.

Anyone who’s bothered to post a comment on the DM page pointing out that petrol is in fact CHEAPER that it was 30 years ago has more red arrows than a big airshow.

Those calling for a “general strike” to “bring the country to its knees” have green arrows.

Likewise the RAC chap interviewed by the BBC this morning pointed out that fuel was at around £1.15 per litre a year ago.

Of course that’s another point sample based on 2 random points in time.
However the RAC chap admitted as much, provided facts, and had other figures to show te cost of motoring has fallen.

‘Anyone who’s bothered to post a comment on the DM page pointing out that petrol is in fact CHEAPER that it was 30 years ago has more red arrows than a big airshow.’

But haven’t they been banned by the PC brigade?

I’m all for The Mail giving away free DVDs – the paper’s journalism can’t justify the cover price on its own – but when will they ever offer their readers something worth watching? I swear that each DVD flung out thus far has been truly shite; all hopelessly inadequate films and now – aaargh! – Catherine Cookson.

The story is by Ray Massey, who knows that his masters don’t expect truth to get in the way of the story, Back in June 2000 he was running a story on a hard done by public sector worker ‘only’ getting 45p a mile allowance, petrol then being 85p per litre – so it’s gone up 28% in 9+ years, about 2.5% per year Back in Nov 2001 I wrote to the Mail re his “Company car bombshell: Company car drivers were warned last night that they face a crippling new Government stealth tax…” story, the reality being that millions of drivers, me included, ended up paying less tax. Search on “Ray Massey” site:dailymail.co.uk and you’ll find loads more agenda-meeting guff.

JohnD, that’s because you’re not True Middle Class(tm).

Belle De Jour is the kind of pornographic material that the Mail constantly bang on about banning as sick filth, her being a middle class hooker is no different from standing on a street corner. The Mail however I guess would like to make you think it is.

Petrol cheaper than 30 years ago? What?

It’s currently £4.95 a gallon (no wonder they switched to selling in litres).

    In 1979 it was 98p a gallon.

    That is not cheaper.
