So perhaps The Mail really wanted Blair in the post………….!?

  2. Steve

Gotta watch those fanatical Belgians plotting to Belgianise us with their bicycles, cuckoo clocks and bowler hats.

Let’s break this one down a bit.

“Labour Crony” means that the government has had cordial relations with the head of government of a nearby state.

“No-one’s heard of” means that the writers at DM Towers haven’t bothered to look him up on Wikipedia.

“Belgian Federalist” means that he doesn’t support the idea of Flanders and Wallonia parting company.

“Wants to tax us” I want a gold plated Ferrari and a suitcase full of di-lithium crystals but there isn’t much chance of that happening. There could be an argument for harmonising tax codes throughout the member states to ensure a level playing field for businesses.

“At least it’s not Blair” So now a foreigner is better than a Natural-born Brit? I think the DM should lay off the di-lithium crystals for a few days.

They are both white so what’s the mail’s problem?.

This sort of thing does a very good job at exposing the weakness of Mail political arguments in general.

For all is failings, in regards to tax, and the EU, he’s probably as centre right as anyone in the current EU parliament.

Blair’s pretty centre right on most things the Mail hold dear. And would have probably done everything in his power to protect the British position, in regards to soverignty.

This is the man that fought for the pound, when the rest of his party wanted it ditched, after all. Something the Mail praised him for. Well, when it was fashionable to do so.

Do they think politically? No, he’s just a red, and the enemy. So let’s campaign, so some “federalist”, EU loving tax raiser gets in charge.

  6. Christo

As for the claims – she’s an ex Labour minister, and current EU commisioner. And is known for her quiet diplomacy, and honesty, in the EU.

Of course, red = cash crazy crony in Mail world.

The Belgian guy? Again, I find nothing in his political career to suggest that he would ever contemplate tax rises. He is in fact a conservative, from the centre-right grouping, who are dead against tax rises anywhere. In fact, there aim is to cut taxes.

“Fedarlist”. I guess that’s just a leader who’s signed the EU charter. As in, everyone.

As typical with right wing politics, the point of stories is to scare people with tasty wording, rather than tell the truth.

  7. Christo

Everyone in the EU is “fanatical” , they are all “federalists” and they all want to “burn our flags, and destroy our culture”.

Reminds me of Hitler’s press in the 30s. Warning that invading jewish polish hoardes who were taking our German jobs, and destroying our economy, and attacking our children with their old testament ways. Beware the fedarlist, communist nations, who seek to make you all speak Czech, and Polish, and wish to make you all swear allegiance to mother Russia.

    Yada Yada Yada

Despite all the nasty Mail headlines over the years ,they have lost.

  9. Marcs

Al these complaints in the Daily Mail about him not being elected, remember that the British elected some real stinkers, they voted for Maggie Thatcher, Enoch Powell won votes and populaism always plays to people fears and scares even supposedly sensible people into voting for crazy people. Hitler was elected, if that is an argument against letting fickle people choose who runs them then I am convinced!
Now to get to work in dragging Britain up by its bootstraps into a federal, non Anglo Saxon economy from the cesspit of the 18th century and the afterglow of empire and into the real world like the tiny insignificant country it is.

  10. Fruitbat

You know, these headlines are pretty comforting. The Mail can whinge all it likes, but the world just ignores it.

  11. Kaihsu Tai

It is rare that the Guardian today has exactly the same headline as the Daily Mail: ‘The great EU stitch-up’.

  12. NJH

This is disguised good news for the Mail. If they had nothing to whinge about constantly, they’d be fucked. I think they’re rationed on number of positive headlines, and they’re probably saving a few for May-June time next year.

  13. TonyB

According to the BBC website Mr Van Rompuy “has been outspoken in the past in opposition to Turkey joining the EU. He warned it could dilute Europe’s Christian heritage”. The Mail gets one of its own into the top job and doesn’t know it!

  14. Mail Man

    Typical confused anti-EU gibberish.

They got the committee chairperson they all claimed to prefer (cos a US Style Pres would be a symptom of their constant wet dream of a Euro super-state) and now they gurn and cry about it.

As per they keep seeing the proof that their Euro single state is a figment of their ridiculous narrow-minded imagination and instead of recognising it for what it is they, like game-saying kids, just ignore that and move on to carp and complain about the 180′ opposite position.

Apparantly this now ‘proves’ that the EU is not democratic.
Nevermind that an EU-wide election would create conflicts and stresses between the sovereign nation states and their peoples.
The reason why we have this so-called ‘democratic deficit’ is precisely because the sovereign nation states are determined to keep the lion’s share of the real power with themselves.

But unfortunately if you recognise & accept that it completely f**ks up the standard anti-EU message.
