    Yet more twisted “news”

  2. Applemask

Some British people are affected? WELL NOW IT’S NEWS WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY

From the squatting story, a perfect moment of Expressness:

One of the Romanian women said they had no money but had applied for “all the benefits we are entitled to”.

Haringey Council said last night that the Romanians were not claiming benefits through the council.

I can’t really imagine a new Romanian immigrant using the word “entitled” anyway.

the “squatters” have now been moved into a different house. yes, it took a few days to sort out, but if this is how the express defines the police having “stood by”, then what would they define as doing something? just bursting into the place and turfing out several people and all their posessions onto the street rendering them homeless and vunerable without any attempt to look into the situation or how it arose?
    ….oh.

“… elderly people forced to sell their homes or raid savings to pay for care…”

That’s what used to be called saving for your old age.

Oddly there is NOW no mention of squatters in the article on the Express website. Does that mean it’s turned out to be a bunch of lies?

  6. NickPheas

Oh no, I’m wrong. It’s just a completely and utterly different story, not that you’d understand that from the front page headline.

“The Mosedales will have to fork out for the repairs on top of the money they have already spent on new locks and legal fees to obtain a court order.”

And that, kids, is why you should make sure you get legal cover as part of your buildings and contents insurance.

    FORCED? What, at gunpoint?

i’m guessing that in typical express fashion, the two stories in the main story are unrelated, but the express is trying to link them in order to make both seem worse.

‘Hero’ [i.e. somebody who was in the army, the BRITISH army] suffers some misfortune. ‘Foreigners’ to blame.

    Simples.

    And crap!

Redknapp may be tax dodging, but he’s no doubt following our press’ wonderful example (Rothemere, Murdoch, the Barclays and Dirty Des himself, to name but four).

I wouldn’t pay tuppence to listen to the woeful immoral Beyonce.

Story discussed on BBC Radio 4 Money Box (available on Listen Again): no he will not have to sell: because his wife lives in the house its value is ignored. Even if it was just his under-60 daughter living in the house a deferred payment would be agreed.

  13. Lazarus

Note also the response of the Express “news” editor in that same broadcast. Which was along the lines of, yes, we know the story isn’t true but it’s how the family told it to us so it’s OK to run it just like that.

In other words – we don’t let the truth spoil a story we like.

  14. Marcs

Why shouldn’t people have to sell their homes to pay for care, regardless of who you are healthcare has to be paid somehow. Of course if there were more people of working age coming into the country then there would be more money for the NHS, but the far right BNP voting, Daily Mail readers don’t like immigration. I wonder if the DM can put two and two together without coming up with three, five or over70 million?

  15. Tony

The mail do seem slightly schizophrenic on this one.. anyone else who was allowed to keep their house *and* get state benefits to live somewhere else would be either described as ’sponging’ or ‘an MP’. Because the person is a white middle class elderly person they’re suddenly entitled to it.

  16. Neander

The point that all the lefties on this site so utterly and totally miss is that those white, middle-class elderly people whom you so despise have spent the last 40 or so years paying tax and National Insurance. It is entirely right and proper to be annoyed when third world immigrants can roll in and start milking the system, as many of them do. Of all the idiotic arguments on this page by far the most cretinous is that by Marcs, who thinks that mass immigration will pay all the bills. It will not and cannot because those immigrants and all the relatives that they bring in with them will themselves require public services and old age pensions. It is obscene that people from the third world can come in such numbers when they already have countries of their own, most of which they’ve made a mess of.

Are we ignoring the troll, or shall we rip his logic to pieces until he fucks off again?

  18. MatthewS

Neander: sorry mate you made a typo in the URL. This is Daily Mail Watch the site you are looking for is http://www.dailymail.co.uk. Dont worry easy mistake to make, I promise you wont find any scary lefties or darkies or femmies or gays on that site. Take care man!
