I guess the fact it was a tory council that took legal action over the bird (only left suffering a broken leg and injured eye without any care) is glossed over pretty sharpish.

OK I am a sad anorak, I have just looked up the sentencing guidelines and they say that the penalty is a medium level community order to 12 weeks imprisonment. Have a look here (It is quite surprising the sorts of crimes you can be imprisoned for! So much for a soft touch!)

I live in the area, and she was arrested for long running animal cruelty.
Having injured animals. Refusing to pay for medical treatment for them. Disease and infection, being untreated. Continuously selling animals to under age children (one of which was executed by an 11 year old and their friends for a joke).
The Goldfish element was a police sting operation. After a long running investigation. To prove that she was selling pets to children, regularly for her court case.
She got a tag, as he lawyers argued that she was too old to fulfill her community service.
Wonder if they bother to ask Joan Higgins about the bird that had to be destroyed and was the real reason for the fine and tag?
