Regarding the “parking rip-off”, I think you will find that’s called capitalism and the free market. Any sensible traveller knows that you book well in advance and shop around for airport car parking. There are enough companies on the web that will help you do that.
Now someone can correct me if this has changed (and under Labour it might well have done) but IIRC Europe had its ‘blue flag’ system in the early to mid 1990s and none (or almost none) of the UK beaches could reach the demanding Euro standards
(for really difficult & advanced stuff like not having sewage on your public bathing beaches etc).
So Major & Co. created British ‘blue flag’ awards (to lower standards, obviously) and began handing them out to much fanfare by the recipient beaches/towns.
Whether or not that is still the case I do not know but I definitely recall that was how the British system began.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that a lot of our ‘cleaning up’ has been done by building & installing longer sewage outlet pipes so our crap just has less chance of being washed back onto the beaches.
The british one is the Quality Coast Award and has much lower standards (it’s basically ‘is the beach tidy and looks a bit pretty’).
It made me laugh that a beach was complaining that they lost their flag because it rained and the drains spilled their contents onto the beach . FFS.. there’s a drain spilling sewage onto the beach. A bit of rain is the least of the problems..
