I think what he actually meant is that in the Eighties there was still some hope left, in-spite of Thatcher. Some people, like him, who were condemned by the Tories to a life on the dole were less apathetic than now and were motivated to go off do something and "great art was made". Thirty years later, their children are even more downtrodden and have had the motivation beaten out of them.

The government we have now is far more extreme than then and I don't believe that even the most cynical on the Left foresaw just how devastating the consequences of Thatcherism would be. Then there was a Labour opposition who offered a real alternative, now we have a Labour party which has accepted most of the changes which Thatcher introduced - so of course there's less hope around now. In that sense I agree with Gallagher, the Eighties were less shit than now.

I got the feeling reading that to, I reckon Noel Gallagher has been "Clarksoned" to an extent. The culture, society and age of the 80's is quite different to now and I think there is just a sense of helplessness in many young people today. At least in the 80's music was a popular outlet for that which sold bucketloads of singles and albums and with the likes of TOTP and the Tube you could make your performance stand out.

I do know in an interview Noel Gallagher did say that he moved to London because there were too many people he knew in the local pub he visited and if brought a round of drinks for everyone there he was deemed a flash bastard. If he got drinks just for himself and whoever he was with at the time he got called a scrooge for not treating there. He couldn't win and so moved away.

I've never hard either of the Gallagers had anything much positive to say about Thatcher, got this from wikipedia...

The only thing that surprises me there is that Mike isn't one of their many correspondents from Thailand. I expect he's still saving for the airfare. He'll probably have more success with women who can't understand a word that he's saying.

Those aren't the reasons. There are other reasons why there are more white men married to asian women than the other way round, and I'm sure Mike knows what they are.

Hmm. Perhaps because he is a human being Simon, one who has had difficulties? The headline is rather sinister too. Do headlines usually specify that carers are there to keep people alive? Carers often do keep people alive but why single out this aspect of their role? I'm a cynic but I wonder about a subtext - let's save all that money, get rid of the carers wages by getting rid of him.

I think the number of carers he has has something to do with it.

They want people to be angry about how much money it costs to pay that many care staff, not taking into account wether this is all the staff who have to visit him on a weekly basis, or the total number of staff who have been employed on and off to care for him over the past few months.

Weight is always the fat person's fault (according to the mail and it's readers). They don't deserve help or sympathy - and if they can be percieved to be costing a lot of money (your tax money of course) to be helped...well that's even worse - that could be spent on schools or roads, or on catching paedos.

By the sound of it, it seems this story is if anything a testament to the greater level of importance that should be placed on mental healthcare in the UK, and in making sure more is done to remove the stigma of asking for emotional help if someone feels they need it (particularly for men, many of whom are still lead to believe it is weak or humiliating to ask for such help).
