Could well be true! I'm just confused how you can read an article about parents who have pleaded guilty to racist abuse and then write a comment saying the parents weren't being racist. Does saying "I'm black and don't find it offensive" add weight to the argument or something? For some reason I want to try and understand the thought process behind these racists, but the more I try to understand it the more it seems like they're simply very thick. Which I suppose is my answer.

Forget the horrible story in the article, let's try and make a completely irreverent political statement on the back of it.....

On the story about the parents who beat their daughter up repeatedly, I'm also bemused by the comments that go on about not hearing the other side of the story. The uncontrovertible evidence is there in the shape of the injuries the girl had, combined with the fact that the parents pleaded guilty. For once, both sides of the story are more or less the same. The fact that they don't want it to be so doesn't change that.

I've long come to the conclusion that stupidity is a prerequisite of racism (and other forms of bigotry). The notion that one can make a meaningful assessment of someone's worth based upon their colour, race, or nationality is so obviously absurd that only an idiot would consider it a possibility. When that's extended, as it so often is by these cretins, to include the origins of the parents or grandparents then we're straying into the realms of the surreal and the bizarre.
Don't get me wrong, I do judge people. I do it all the time, sometimes in haste and on far from conclusive evidence so inevitably I get it wrong sometimes and have to do an embarrassing reverse ferret. But the crucial difference is that I'm basing my judgements upon what people say and what they do, not what they look and sound like.

I think you've answered your own question. But that's not going to stop me having my twopenn'th - cos that's just the kind of get I am.

No I appreciate the answer. And as much as it does seem to come down to them being ignorant at best, are there not also intelligent racists about? But again, I suppose that would depend on my definition of intelligence, but surely there'll be people from teachers to nuclear physicists who harbor racist views? I guess you can be academically intelligent but at the time socially inept. And I've just sort of answered my own question again I suppose!

We've got evidence that reactionary/racist ideas are linked to low intelligence (g). And that is clearly true if you look at EDL/BNP footsoldiers abd a lot of Facebook statuses and so on. The research position is that low g leads to them having rigid and narrow thought processes and tendency to believe simplistic positions. In other words they are not clever enough to understand the nuances of a more liberal position.

It seems to me that there is a crossover position of people who have average intelligence but could fall either way. In those cases context must have a strong determining effect, the upbringing and culture to which an individual is subjected will affect their interpretation of the world and the answers they find to complex and difficult fundamental questions.

Another thing may be that not all intelligences are homogenous - the Howard Gardner position. I'm not sure that I accept his point that an individual has a number of separate intelligences, but I'm quite happy with the idea that intelligence has definite facets or characteristics - this is Gardner's model:



An average or above-average person may have low scores in Existential, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal areas, but score high in Verbal/Linguistic and Logical/Mathematical. That would mean a person who could write well, spell, study and pass exams but still had little or no empathy for others or understanding of complex matters to do with social relationships.

Interesting stuff, and again it does basically seem to boil down to lack of intelligence. It's just something I can't get my head around. I wouldn't class myself as particularly intelligent at all, yet I've never even considered racism as anything other than moronic, along with my circle of friends, girlfriend, family etc. It's just an alien concept to us and don't actually encounter it often at all so I guess seeing such a concentrated number of racists on a site like DM fascinates me in a way. I'm probably just overthinking it, really.

Your example about EDL is spot on, to be fair. When you see them talking* they really are just the most moronic fuckwits you'll find and all it seems to take is a handful of slightly more intelligent racists to spout some bullshit racist "facts" to them and they lap it up. That, and they're usually lifes failures and need someone to blame other than themselves.
