Yeah. They could've. But as you acknowledge via your use of italics, it's highly unlikely. They'd be much more likely either to be let off, cautioned or maybe bound over.

I found it concerning that it was even a theoretical possibility.

This happened 27 years ago - and the man to be prosecuted for the crime was under 18 at the time. So he must have been about 8 or 9 years old at the time of the murder, then? The mind boggles.........

I've skimmed the article and I can't see where she gets that from. It says the men are now in their 40s or 50s, so would have been between 13 and 32 at the time, so probably between 16 and 18 (known number).

Apparently under 18 = 8 or 9.

Easily the winner for me, at least, today.....

There is a large difference between the orientations of consenting adults and other orientations, particularly paedophilia.

LindyLou has subtracted the years that have passed since the murder from the maximum age of the alleged perpetrator at that time.

TBH, I can understand the thinking behind this as I had a smidgen of dyscalculia when I was t'lad and was not allowed to sit a maths 'O' level for fear of pulling down the school's results average.

Did you understand lowering the average?

Not really, but I learned a lesson about how to be really sneaky when I realised why the maths master gave me the wrong date for the exam.

Thanks for the contribution, dickhead.

Seems that the Mail can't trust its users to play nicely with the story about him succesfully completing the swim and are not accepting comments.

Free speech and all that..... "As long as my freedom to say what I want is defended then fuck everyone else"

Laura. A cunt and a piece of shit.

The point here isn't whether Pussy Riot's actions were offensive, they were and that was deliberate and calculated. So they have a sentence to serve. The issue is whether a two year jail sentence is proportionate. I suspect it is yet more evidence of the kind of police state that Putin is trying to create. So one leap forward, two leaps back for Russia.

You believe that causing offence should be a crime?

In certain circumstances, yes. If I were to recreate the opening scenes of Die Hard 3 in the middle of Brixton, I'd expect to be arrested. Or killed, whichever came quicker.

Freedom of expression has always come with limitations and caveats. Those who believe that we should be free, yeah, to, like, say whatever man and just like chill, yeah? should fucking grow up.

That said, the Russian establishment has damaged itself in international opinion. I also doubt that they particularly give a shit what Madonna and Peter Gabriel think of them.

What I think isn't really the issue is it? Is it up to me? No.
The fact is it's a crime in Russia, also in this country and I imagine every country in the world.
What varies is the kind and level of offensiveness which is tolerated.

We're into "Imagine if they did it in a Mosque!!!" territory so lets go with that as an example.....
If one of those EDL supporting skinhead bands (are they still called "Oi bands", they were in the 80s) performed the same stunt in a Mosque, would you support their right to do so?

I wouldn't.

I do however support the EDL's right to peacefully protest and their right to freedom of speech - however loathsome and stupid their speech is.

To be frank they overstepped the mark when they entered the church. I will accept that. However my guess is this is more political than anything else.

They are allowed to publicly air their annoyance with any organisation/group as long as it does not intrude on the privacy of others or they make direct threats.

The punishment is disproportionate though. That may well be more to do with slowly encroaching oppression that is occurring in Russia.

As it is I was annoyed with 'Laura' for suggesting they should be punished for 'smirking'. That does go against freedom of expression.

Oh course it's political and I think the punishment is disproportionate - what I don't know is whether it's disproportionate in Russian law. Has there ever been a comparable case in Russia? If so, what was the sentence? Do we have any Russian legal experts here?

Pussy Riot knew what they were doing, they knew it would cause offence (that was the plan) and I'm sure they knew it was illegal. I wonder what they thought would happen?
