according to the mail today:

IN FEMAIL TODAY...

* GIVE US SIZE 16!: Janet Street Porter leads the criticism over fashion's sizism

which is odd, as "lead[ing] the criticism" seems to look an awful lot like writing the same article as inumerable female columnists have for years.
and falling into all of it's lazy trappings as well...

yes, the sensible way to go about this debate is by simply bitching at thin people.

can we cut out this "real woman" rubbish, that's just all women.
being a size 8 (which, outside of the teenage market, it is also hard to buy clothes for) doesn't make me any less of a woman than a 12, 14, or 16. also, for the record, this doesn't mean my breasts are "bee stings", or that you can see my ribs. clothes sizing and hight/weight distribution is a subtel and complicated thing, clearly more than jsp could get her head around.

I hate the term "real women". I think Dove even use it as a marketing ploy. This means there must be "not real women". Who's that then? Lily Savage, Ru Paul, Dame Edna....?

Why do some larger women describe themselves as "real women"? There's a hint of "wanting to belong" in that term. As if they're afraid that they themselves aren't "the norm" so they want people to castigate thin women. Sure, what a lot of thin famous women (models, celebs etc) do to make themselves thin, or stay thin, isn't normal, by not eating (and other means) but there are millions of women who are either naturally thin (metabolism) or they just eat and live healthily. Just because you do the latter doesn't make you less "real" than if you choose to eat a lot and not exercise.

I think they are saying that they are real women as well.

But that's it- they're not saying that, in my view. They say "real" women in a monopolising way sort of like; "Us larger size women are "real" women not like skinny women. That's not normal. We're normal." I don't think they're saying "we're normal as well". At least we're all in sync that JSP is not normal. Result :D !

Why can't all women be 'real' women whether they're size 6 or 16? I don't get why there has to be some kind of line drawn and frankly it just makes women who go on about how it's unnatural to be anything under a size 14 sound really petty. Still, I suppose it's better than banding together to agitate for equal pay, better childcare etc...

Shriek-Porter always goes on about how clever she is. She had two abortions by the time she was 19. How clever is that eh? She was on TV a while back promoting her latest book F*ck You! (or whatever) she was decrying women you don't shag on the first "date". Like there's something wrong with waiting a couple of days. The slag.

And with the greatest respect, what business is that of yours? In fact it just comes across as being a somewhat unpleasant and repugnant comment by an ill-informed and warped individual. Must be those Daily Mail values at work again.

My girlfriend had an abortion when she was 16. Have you got something to say about her?

I've taken the abuse out of this post but it has made me extremely angry.
