She's even less convincing than Pearson was. Reading her last column, I got the impression she had been forced to write it at gunpoint whilst a sub-editor dictated.

Oh, this is choice. Sandra Parsons, apparently seriously, holds up the family of the Mitford girls as a model of good old-fashioned parenting - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic ... n-now.html

Specifically - "Truly tough love
In her new autobiography the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire says that, as the seventh child and sixth girl, her parents would have preferred her to be a boy.
Her eldest sister, Nancy Mitford, said upon her arrival: 'How disgusting of the poor darling to go and be a girl.'
Her siblings used to tell her she was stupid and a bore, then make a circle around her and chant: 'Who is the least important person in this room? You.'

'I read now about the necessity of self esteem in children,' she says dryly in her book.
'We would have become impossibly pleased with ourselves had we been indulged with such a thing.'

Now aged 90, the Duchess nevertheless observes: 'I look back on my childhood as a happy time.'
Perhaps it's time to dump all those parenting manuals and just read 'Debo' instead."

She cannot be serious.

Given that the sister Debo Mitford was closest to was Diana Mosley, and she saw nothing wrong with Unity's hero-worship of Hitler, I think I'd take all her opinions with a large pinch of salt.

I can't decide whether Sandra P is sucking up to the aristocracy, or lazily pandering to the misplaced nostalgia of elderly Mailites (I were brung up tuff and it never dun me any harm, mollycoddled kids these days don't even have to climb chimneys, what is the world coming to), or is it that she doesn't actually know who the Mitfords were? Looking at those three suggestions, I've probably persuaded myself which one to choose by the word 'lazily'. Nobody ever accused a Mailite Glenda Slag of doing her research properly. The very idea!

It was rumoured that Unity had a child by Hitler born in Britian.

Probably working at the Mail.

When people like that do silly/nasty stuff, it's because they're "characters". This character may or not be connected with the upbringing. You decide.

What's going on with the Mail today? Two subtle digs on two different stories and both have got in. Extraordinary.

Meanwhile in the bar alongside there's a number of stories of Z-list starlets in not much clothing. As the President of the Tampa Scotch Egg Appreciation Society might say, "you couldn't make it up".

Oh. My. God. Just the most unbelievable snobbery, or is it inverted snobbery? If I didn't know better I'd think it was self-parody. Does anyone under 75 still believe this shit? (and by that I mean any one of the bits and pieces in the column because they are all odious.)

A spume of bile and snobbishness. The readers will lap it up.
