We know the Mail has form for plagiarism, but now a story has appeared under the byline of a reporter who was on holiday at the time...

Stranger and stranger...

Another one, this time from the San Francisco Weekly.

The Mail won't stop doing this (because it's cheap and gets the US market onto their website) until someone makes them...

When it comes to lifting stories from other papers the Mail policy seems to be that they acknowledge the source of the story if it comes from another national daily paper, but if it has come from a local paper, the Internet or an overseas publication they usually don't bother.

The business plan for the Mail website seems to be quantity rather than quality and given that their top earning writers are only churning out a couple of columns a week it is hardly surprising that staff on the night desk are surfing the net in search of cheap filler stories. Whenever a see a story on the site which has been put there in the early hours of the moring by 'Mail Reporter' I take it for granted that it has been stolen from another paper or website.

I've noticed that the range of stories in the Femail/Showbiz section tends to follow what's posted on jezebel.com quite closely. And then there's the fact that a few times a year, the Mail will rehash an old article from the BBC that's suddenly gone viral for some reason -- portraying it as a new story. Mail hacks must be under instructions to cover everything that's listed in the "Most Read" list on the BBC's site at all times.

The choice of articles the DM includes online seems to be driven chiefly by search engine considerations -- as evidenced by this recent job posting (a non-job if I ever saw one). I mean, how else can anyone explain the constant presence of the Kardashians or whatever they're called in a UK 'newspaper'?

Ripping off a website that publishes "zany" lists of stuff. Quality journalism indeed.

Quite. I was looking at that on Cracked last night.

Still, nice to know what passes for research in the Mail offices. If a piece turns up in the next few days about 'hilarious' serious movies redone as romantic comedies, or why older gamers can't hack it online, we'll at least know why.
