Couldn't see this posted anywhere else, but my apologies if I missed it in another thread.

Steve Doughty has written about the allegations of racist abuse made by Patrice Evra and Anton Ferdinand. He says:

Quote:
Football reflects us all as it always did, and these days it’s both racist and not racist at the same time. Things may not be perfect but, at the end of the day, Gary, there are worse things to complain about.

So, Mr Evra and Mr Ferdinand, I know you feel insulted. But perhaps in this case you could just put up with it and get on with the game.

He also refers to clubs promoting anti-racism campaigns 'beyond the point of boredom'.

Show Racism the Red Card have said they're 'appalled' by his 'ludicrous' comments: http://www.srtrc.org/news/news-and-events?news=2618

They are appalling, and just another dog whistle for the EDL and BNP. This one could go nuclear.

I'm amazed any national news outlet would let that through, even as 'opinion'. I think the Mail and Express are flexing their right-wing muscles in the present climate - their views being willingly reflected by government, the PCC supine. They have spent a long time softening people up for this.

And, of course, Doughty was part responsible for the 'Christian persecuted for saying gays can't marry' article.

Such a star he has his own RightMinds blog.

But sorry - mixed up the articles. It was the 'The make-up of modern Britain: 70% of us claim to be Christians... and only 1.5% are gay' one I meant.

What a stupid article. Where does he get the idea from that the CBI is an impartial organisation that doesn't like to rock the boat?

His scenario about a employer taking on an employee who spends all day drinking coffee and going on Facebook is total rubbish because most people don't get many rights for 12 months and it is still fairly simple to sack someone in their first month in a job. Any employer taking on a new employee should ensure that they interview new staff carefully and take up references.

You can, I presume, get very good staff cheaply at the moment. You're going to have to be really bad to pick a useless cnut like me.

And maybe even monitoring staff internet use and productivity. This is what company disciplinary policies are for.

Under Doughty's proposals will it be easier or harder to sack someone who has strong Christian beliefs?

That's well put.

How about sacking people who come into the office holding the Mail and saying "You seen what the Muslims have done now?"

As for the internet usage point, isn't that fairly easy to check, if you want to chuck the book at someone?

Quote:
At present there are a million hoops to go through: the employer has to identify a legal reason for dismissal, has to give warnings, make disciplinary rules known, make allegations in detail with evidence, give a right of appeal, allow an employee to be accompanied at a disciplinary hearing.

Is that really the best he can do to make his case? His point doesn't appear to extend beyond indicating that an employer needs to have a reason and for that to be a fair reason for sacking staff as though this is truly shocking stuff, plus it's simply untrue to say that all sacked employees have an automatic right to take their case to an employment tribunal.

Quote:
The lesson is this: if an employer can possibly afford it he must have a human resources officer and a lawyer to deal with it all.

Or alternately the lesson is just don't treat your employees like shit in the first place.

Weird how the people who rail against the Human Rights Act also rail against basic rights for workers. They just want to rewind a century or two but don't feel able to say it in public. And it pisses them off.
