He's French, and that's very much part of the package. If he were an accountant from Redditch (or a Muslim), his jurassic attitude to women would be called out for what it is. But as he's a carpenter from rural France, he fits a certain Mellors/Dépardieu fantasy of rough, physical, unbourgeois masculinity. Obviously he and Brick take this to a ridiculous degree — viz the photo with the gun — but I'm convinced one reason Mail readers clicked on the story yesterday was that plenty of them aspire to a milder version of the Pascal-Samantha dynamic: big strong man, attractive docile woman, everyone in their place. No need to worry about who does the washing-up or who calls the shots in bed. The promise of not having to think, not having to negotiate is almost irresistible to Mail readers.

My partner is from the Lot. It's proper hunting, rugby-playing, foie-gras-and-a-pichet-for-the-road territory. The locals aren't especially put out by the fact that we're a same-sex couple, but they can't get their heads around my being vegetarian. For once, when someone says I just need a bit of meat inside me, it's meant literally.

You do have to sneakily admire the way that the Mail so blatantly exploits the stupidity and gullibility of those who read it by pitching columnists who write a complete load of old bollocks, yet still manage to get large numbers of fuckwits hot under the collar with it.

On the other hand, it is deeply sad that there are such large volumes of gullible fuckwits out there. No wonder we end up with reactionary Tory governments.

It feels too much like a set-up. By giving Samantha Brick miles of rope and an extremely public tree, the Daily Mail is trying to trollify us all. It's a little peek behind the curtain at how the media deliberately pits women against women for fun and profit. Fuck that. Ladies, let's stop biting.

Jezebel's more or less hit the nail on the head, there. But I think Malcolm is also right to say that Brick does not actually hold the ludicrous views she expressed in the first article, but rather deliberately and cynically sat down to write the most provocative shite she could come up with (she has all but admitted it in the conveniently rapidly produced reaction piece) - and the job's a good 'un.
