His utterly non-sentient phone believes in global warming because he can't get his head round a simple options menu or a battery warning indicator?

If I were that thick and fucking mad I sure wouldn't be sharing it with the world Hitch.

Well as understanding climate science requires a good understanding of maths... We can safely say your opinion on climate change is worthless...

edit: someone in the comments (which are tucked away in a nice safe space where hitchens doesn't have to look at them) also points out that leaving fully charged phones plugged in actually knobs the battery. so hitchens has padded his article with 90 words of vague and frankly slightly paranoid guessing.

also, anyone know anything about the dispatches numbers he quotes in the part about maths teaching? (from which he goes onto extrapolate that reading and writing standards must also be poor, even though there are no figures for those subjects*) i can't hep but wonder if it is conflating the ability to do mathamatics, with the ability to do mental calculation, when they're really not the same thing.

*although as rob pointed out he does admit to being shite at maths himself, so that might explain his inability to understand how statistics work.

Hitchens has found himself on a list of climate change deniers.

Probably sees this a badge of honour....

I enjoyed the mel phillips entry.

FFS. does this fuckwit actually believe what she writes? wouldn't you feel embarrassed if you woke one morning only to find that the shit you blethered last night after the 3rd bottle of blue nun had made it to print?

or maybe she's just a media whore. either way she's unhinged, in a david eicke sort of way.

She's a shit stirrer. Tries to provoke emotional responses from "liberals" (which nowadays seems to include anyone who is reasonable).

Like Ann Coulter..... without Ann Coulter's ability.... which doesn't say much for either of them.

I think Mel may actually have some personality and stability issues. Allegedly.

It is rumoured that she is known amongst journalists as Mentally Illips. A tad tasteless but...

From Mel's website, plugging her new book:
Quote:
In what we tell ourselves is an age of reason, we are behaving increasingly irrationally. More and more people are signing up to weird and wacky cults, para-psychology, seances, paganism and witch- craft. There is widespread belief in ludicrous conspiracy theories, such as the 9/11 terrorist attack being an American plot.

The basic cause of all this unreason is the erosion of the building blocks of western civilisation. We tell ourselves that religion and reason are incompatible, but in fact the opposite is the case. It was Christianity and the Hebrew Bible that gave us our concepts of reason, progress and an orderly world-the foundations of science and modernity.

So, the reason why there is more irrationality is that people are increasingly rejecting irrationality.

Right"........ :?

If you haven't already, you should try to get hold of this short tome and give it a read.
