He'll be busy working up a froth at the typewriter right now, figuring out a way to slam the Olympics opening ceremony hard, without getting arrested.

I read Hitchens' column today and I was sorely disappointed.

He was not as funny as he can be. I would ask him to sort his act out but as his act requires him to be blissfully unaware of his ironic statements then that is not an option.

Now he is ending up simply being nothing more than inane.

In the days of Barnum's circus (I think) there was a sideshow act called "sober Susan", the girl who could not crack a smile. It turned out that she had a form of facial paralysis that meant that her expression was locked into a frown. I think PH has a similar affliction of the soul.

Actually had a rethink of my last statement.

He's a puritan. He's obsessed by the idea that someone, somewhere, might be having fun. He has to find fault with everything smacking of fun. So it's not the olympic torch but a "Nazi flame". You like the torch? You Nazi, you! By the same logic, presumably Porsches and VWs are 'Nazi cars'.

But yes, puritan. And like his 17th century predecessors, it's not enough for him to simply sit quietly in a state of grace while the bad people carried on their sinning outside; he has to voice his disapproval whenever he can, and as loudly as he can. It's not about freedom from persecution for him, it's the freedom TO persecute that he craves.

Ah Hitchens is starting to show some promise again.

Hitchens has opinions on 'talent'.

Well you were selected to write for the mail. It must take a lot of 'talent' to hit rock bottom....

At least your colleagues realize it pays well.......

He devotes nearly half the article complaining that a journalist on the New Statesman misquoted him but then he finishes the article by claiming that Bradley Wiggins has called for cycling helmets to be made compulsory, Wiggins has made it clear that he has never suggested that helmets should be compulsory for cyclists.

This from the man who spent a good chunk of a radio debate poking fun at his opponent for wearing a hat and having tattoos. Then he complains about people taking the piss out of him so he's not taken seriously.

He doesn't like equality apparently. Mind you most of the time I read Hitchens I do see how some people are less talented than others.

Sad really.... but life is harsh like that.....

Quote Unquote – getting it straight with the Huffington Post and Mehdi Hasan

Direct quotation is the hard currency of journalism. If you have someone’s actual words, reliably recorded, then you have a very valuable commodity.

Hitchens is complaining about bad jounalism :snicker:... :psst: try looking closer to home.....

If I was Mehdi Hasan I would start complaining about freedom speech, the abolition of liberty and how things are starting to feel like being in East Germany....

Talk about getting back to form sunshine....

Just caught the last couple of minutes of a Newsnight debate which featured (amongst others) Hitchens and Russell Brand debating drugs. Brand was making Hitchens squirm in a delightful way by, well by being Russell Brand really.

I'll certainly be watching it when it's on iplayer.

I thought Brand could have handed Hitchens his ass on that TV 'debate' they had awhile back.

If only he calmed down........ Hitchens argument was terrible and he was throwing irony in every direction by calling Brand a child while not having the decency or the self-control to hear what Brand had to say and constantly interrupting him.....

Hitchins v Brand on newsnight. I'm having Brand to take the medal.

John O'Shea ‏@politicalhackuk
Daily Mail writer criticising someone for ad hominem argument. #ironymeter #newsnight

Saggydaddy ‏@Saggydaddy
Brand to Hitchens. 'you're like a peculiar child' Never a truer word spoken on #newsnight

John O'Shea ‏@politicalhackuk
RT @CriminologyUK: Brand as an ex/recovering drug addict can be annoying too though. (sigh) #newsnight < true. Still preferable to Hitchens.

Sunder Katwala ‏@sundersays
I'm scoring Peter Hitchens well ahead on points in that opening round with Russell Brand at the Excel #newsnight (Eh?)

Emma Langman ‏@EmmaLangman
You cannot 'deter' a person from taking drugs if they r self-medicating to deal with incredible pain. Don't criminalise sorrow @bbcnewsnight

John O'Shea ‏@politicalhackuk
"The Tory party is a soppy liberal party" says Hitchens. #hurrahfortheblackshirts #newsnight

Paul Flynn ‏@Paulflynnmp
Russell Brand persusive on NNT. Hitchens blames BBC for giving air time to someone with personal experience. Lesson: prohibition has failed.

Andrew Pelling ‏@AndrewJPelling
Daily Mail Peter Hitchens' performance on #Newsnight is most unpleasant.

Paul Flynn ‏@Paulflynnmp
Hitchens so gratutously offensive, Russell Brand appears compassionate, reasonable and restrained.

David Aaronovitch ‏@DAaronovitch
Ah. Responding to Peter Hitchens. A nasty but temporary condition.

John O'Shea ‏@politicalhackuk
Brand is capable of doing far better than that. Hitchens massively wrong, but Brand not countering him well. #newsnight

Krishnan Guru-Murthy ‏@krishgm
If you invite Peter Hitchens to debate you have to shut him up from time to time or debate is wasted. Russell Brand on best behaviour

Laura Green ‏@LauraMagsGreen
I'd love to say this reasonably but there is no other way of saying this. Peter Hitchens is a c**t.

The DM Reporter ‏@DMReporter
PETER HITCHENS: "My drug hell - how an erratic and uncontrollable addict verbally abused me while BBC staff looked on with glee!"

As I said, in their previous debate Hitchens accused Brand of being a child.

My guess is Hitchens displayed poor impulse control once again? Yes? No?

I only caught the last couple of minutes but, from what I saw, he was in full-on patronising "What do you know?" tosser mode.
