Pete must be gunning for the lead role in a remake of "One Foot In The Grave". It's preposterous to be so miserable and dour about absolutely everything all of the time.

That's a gross insult. Victor Meldrew was like Pollyanna on uppers compared to Hitchens.

Yeah, I always had Victor down as a decent man at heart - it wouldn't have worked as a comedy for so long otherwise. He just wanted to enjoy his retirement with his good lady, only to have (amusing to us viewers) misfortune bowl him over at every turn.

Hitchens, on the other hand, seems to actively go around looking for things to get annoyed about. He's a miserable bastard and wants the rest of us to exist in his grey, puritan world.

Even Stalin didn’t dare kill off Sundays – but the Tories will

Is anyone a true Conservative in Hitch's book? Apart from himself?

Even he isn't. He's a puritan, only happy when people are not just doing what he wants, but are actively loathing the process. Otherwise they're doing the right things for all the wrong reasons.

When it comes to a lot of planks of Thatcherite-and-since conservatism (free markets, state control over people - an important one here, he's not a fan of overzealous law and order, preferring that people obey his wishlist of social conventions through fear of pariahhood or 'shunning'), he's dead against current Toryism.

Otherwise, he's increasingly reactionary against the prevailing social trend for the sake of it. For one, 'I told you so' is almost always proved right, even if in some very minor and non-representative way. Second, it guarantees him an audience and the thrill of being talked about. If everyone else is bigging up and loving the Olympics (even if previously cynical), then being the one person decrying them ensures you lots of attention from news reviewers.

Damn right and he hypocritically uses Stalin to make his ironic self defeating points. The guy has the nerve to demand reason in his arguments.

He loves being sanctimonious. He prefers the old shitty form of being English where people "mustn't grumble". Probably why he hates anti-depressants so much. Of course he has the nerve to whine about how he doesn't like the way things are now....

He lives in a house of hypocrisy throwing great big dollops of self inflicted irony in every direction.

Hilarious.

His thoughts on Parade's End are laughable. Yes, a character does something then says something that apparently contradicts it. This is done to highlight his hypocrisy, as any student of English, drama or in fact anyone with a smidgen of common sense could tell you. And you know why the BBC (and ITV for that matter) make so many costume dramas? Because they're popular, especially overseas.

Then he lays into Justine Greening, the transport secretary elected to parliament by campaigning on local issues. According to PH, this is bad. WT actual F? Sorry, but regardless of political persuasion I prefer my MP to give a shit about what's going on locally, and not be parachuted in a la Louise Mensch or George Galloway, just to use the constituency as a springboard for their greater ambitions.

And why use her as a comparison to Rhodes Boyson? Aside from both being MPs, it really is a case of oranges and apples. Or has he been up in a debate against Greening this week and come out the worse for it?

Oh, and getting back to Greening, issues such as Hathrow may be local to her constituency, but they have national implications. Regulations bought in for Heathrow may well be extended to cover airports nationwide. So actually it's a perfect example of how local politicking can take on a life of it's own and make a difference nationally. So shut up Hitchens you cunt.
