Aside from the beach volleyballers, the other Olympians that get tabloid journos' hearts a-beating are Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Ennis. The Mail is running a snide story about Ennis earning £1m in sponsorship money, allowing her to drive a "flash car, more often associated with Premier League football players," the lightning rods for Mailite envy and disgust. We also learn that she lives in a "£330,000 three-bedroom semi-detached home in an upmarket suburb" of, um, Sheffield.

In case red-blooded male readers are bored by details of her sponsorship deals and living arrangements, the final paragraph reassures them that:

Quote:
Ennis has also increased her profile by taking part in several risque photo shoots for men’s magazines, including one for the August issue of GQ magazine in which she appears in wet-look hot pants, stilettos and a low-cut red blazer.

Front cover shot included. But this is not enough for some:

Quote:
I see that she has taken smiling lessons from Victoria Beckham, please bring back the Australian hurdles girl of yesterday !!! At least she smiled and looked like she was enjoying herself. I'm fed up with this type of misery face that seems all the rage now!

She's hardly stunning but good luck to her.

- Terry, London, 21/7/2012 10:00 Rating (0)
Quote:
She's won nought yet. Victoria Pendleton is a multi world champion and already an Olympic winner as is Rebecca Addlington. Ennis may end up the Anna Kournikova of athletics if she's not careful.

I wonder what Martin has achieved.

I find the concept of Beach Volleyball as an Olympic sport fairly ridiculous.

What's truly absurd is the process used to decide what does or doesn't constitute an Olympic sport:

Quote:
In order for a sport or discipline to be considered for inclusion in the list of Summer Olympics sports, it must be widely practised in at least 75 countries, spread over four continents. Women's sports or disciplines may be considered if practised in at least 50 countries.

How vague is the expression "widely practised"? Once the criteria have been met, a vote is then taken by the notoriously incorruptible IOC.

By that logic you should be able to nominate wanking as an olympic sport and they wouldn't be able to refuse.

I find it hard to believe that volleyball is that popular all over the world, given the number of countries whos weather does not exactly support the playing of beach sports (the number of people who play it on holiday surely doesn't count)? And why the 25 country difference in the criteria for including "women's" sports (whatever that means)?

But it's girls in skimpy outfits, so I suppose even if there were only three pro teams in the whole world they'd find a way of including it.

There are plenty of minority sports with small but passionate followings.

She's won nought? Apart from being world champion, world indoor champion and European champion, presumably.

Harry’s date at the beach volleyball: Prince, William and Kate will go to more than 30 different Olympic events

Of which only one is mentioned in the main article. There are a few helpful pictures in case you don't know what beach volleyball players look like (but only of female ones, strangely).

You've heard of Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Ennis... now meet the OTHER Olympic babes going for gold

Babes? :?

Quote:
Some of the stars have already made their names as GB poster girls with heptathlete Jessica Ennis gracing the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine and cyclist Victoria Pendleton stripping down for GQ readers.

That's how a female athlete makes a name for herself, in Daily Mail land.

Quote:
But there are plenty more female sports stars who make Lycra just as glamorous as the popular faces we know and love.

And that's the function of sportswomen, in Daily Mail land.

There's much, much more. First up:

Quote:
Olympic hopeful Jenna Randall, who is famous for her lovely legs, captains the Team GB synchronised swimmers

Readers interested in her training routine or what attracted her to the sport will be disappointed. Readers who wish to gawp at pictures of her "enviable legs" will not:

Quote:
Jenna previously scrubbed up for a number of sexy images as she posed for a charity calendar last year.

The star, along with other female Olympic hopefuls, showed off the results of their hard work for lingerie firm Nichole de Carle London

Next up — you knew it!!

Quote:
Women's beach volleyball will be among the hottest tickets in town next summer … Pretty pairing Zara Dampney and Shauna Mullin will be donning their smallest briefs and crop tops for the event.

Zara Dampney, 24, and Shauna Mullin, 26, are so in demand that they are renting out their rears in an advertising deal that encourages spectators to photograph their behinds.

Huh? Wouldn't renting out their rears make them, like, prostitutes who do anal?

Our next "babe" keeps her clothes on but that's okay because she is posh:
Quote:
The 27-year-old granddaughter of a billionaire rides in high circles

She's not in some kind of mid-air spiralling event, but rather a dressage champion.

The rest:

Quote:
Georgina Cassar is the youngest of the babes. … With resemblances to Georgina Salpa and Cheryl Cole, the tanned, brunette gymnast will not be short of attention this summer.
Quote:
2012 has been a watershed year for the radiant blondes [divers] … Tonia Couch, a close friend of Tom Daley, is regularly snapped for shoots in her swimwear.

And so it goes on. It really doesn't feel like 2012 in here.

Quote:
Jessica Ennis' fat rippling in the bottom picture.

Not a boob between them all together... :(

I do like the idea of Olympic wanking. I reckon we should be in with an excellent chance of a gold. Our team of highly trained and experienced wankers:

David Cameron
Michael Gove
Toby Young
Richard Littlejohn
Nick Ferrari
Nargle Fargle

I disagree. With their prior experience and 'soggy biscuit' training, this is just another sport where public schoolboys will dominate the field.

That's what seems to take place in the Daily Mail offices each time there's a story about sportswomen.

Some sort of Riefenstahlian postergirl for the 'weiss und stolz' posse, now sitting the games out for her crass e-bigotry.
From the comments:

For goodness sake, if this girl has strong views against immigrants, she should be allowed to air them- whatever happened to free speech???

Well, in Nazi Germany (which 'Golden Dawn' seem to want to emulate) it led to, uh, arrest, interrogation, deportation, and death :?

Backlash after Australian newspaper describes Olympic triple-gold medallist as fat and questions her fitness

Olympians are just a new set of women to write fat/thin/phwoar stories about.

You'll be shocked that the Australian paper in question is owned by News Corporation.

Have he mail spoken on he attractiveness of otherwise of the Scottish footballers who wouldn't sing the national anthem?

I see they are up in arms about it, and Giggs Bellamy and some other welsh lad not doin it for the men.

I'd be more worried that Giggs was fucking terrible to be honest.
