Indeed, but the Mailites' main objection seems to be that they don't like a pushy woman:

I agree with all the green arrowed comments here I don't like this story one bit. She seems (as others have said) a spoilt rich girl who set her sights on something and got it. There is something deeply disturbing about this - I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but I'm sure that if she had been a man she wouldn't have managed to get her book published.

Again, if the genders were reversed, I don't think James Reed would find it "deeply disturbing" for a man to desire a younger woman and then successfully pursue her. One of the comments compares it to grooming, of course.

I did notice that the major thing she seem's to be accused of is being spoilt, not the word they would have chosen I think to describe a 19 year old Romanian man and a 12 year old English girl. Spoilt is one of those words like silly that only ever seems to be applied to women.

However there is a wider issue here, which comes up whenever there are stories of older women and younger boys. It is normally treated as jokey, as something the boy should think himself lucky for having occurred. My eldest is 12, if a 19 year old woman were showing this kind of interest in him I would not consider it a joke or undamaging. I cannot see her behavior as anything but grooming, the fact they are now married again would be treated very differently if the genders were reversed.

Yeah, I see that. One of the problems is that the story is so partial and condensed that it's hard to judge how the relationship progressed. It does seem suspicious that Dunlop started fancying him only a month before he turned 18, but then again they hadn't seen each other for five years prior to that. The only indication that she took an unhealthy interest in Vlad when he was 13 is in this passage, which reeks of the Daily Mail sub-editor's deliberately ambiguous re-write:

Quote:
Why Vlad, they wanted to know? Why not any of the other children?

‘He’s bright and deserves a chance,’ I said. More than that I couldn’t say. I just knew it had to be Vlad.

In fact, the Mail on Sunday ran an interview with Dunlop last weekend, with a lot more context and a lot less innuendo.

What's clear is that the Mail has published this so that its readers can a) slag Tessa Dunlop off for being inappropriately forward and controlling, b) mock and pity Vlad for allowing himself to be exploited and emasculated, and c) raise its disapproving eyebrow at relationships where there's a significant power differential in favour of the woman (who, in this case, is western, wealthier and older).

I couldn't see anywhere more appropriate.

That could also go in the exploding irony meter thread.

Very old news - a rehash of an article that I first saw around the time of the notoriously 'raunchy' X Factor final of a year or two ago. Does Stock have a new record to promote?

I think he may well - during the week I remember hearing Peter Waterman (on the Simon Mayo show to talk about Donna Summer) talking about a SAW revival tour over the coming months.

Hmmm so no overt use of sex here then...

She was either 18 or 16 when that was taken, according to wikki, far younger and more easily manipulated than either Gaga or Rhiannon.

Well, yes. if anybody could be said to be guilty of using sex as a substitute for talent, it's Sinitta.

Sinitta has a towering talent compared with SAW produced Sabrina
