Nice driveway, there's just one problem... Red-faced OAP builds parking spot for her car days after council put up lamppost

Quote:
Widow Mrs Annals, who has lived in her £250,000 home for the last 30 years, admitted: 'I have done it the wrong way round'.
She explained: 'I had the driveway laid after the lamp post was put there.
'I hope the council do the work (moving the lamp post) as soon as possible. I am quite happy with it (paying the bill).

From the comments:

Why did the council put the lamp post were it is, just to be bloody minded? Why not a couple of yards to the right ie level with the boundary of both houses shown?

I do like it when they get really worked up and start slinging round accusations of stupidity, thus conclusively demonstrating that it's actually the commenter who is stupid. e.g. -

This sums up all council Jobsworths. No common sense just it's more than my Jobs worth to actually think, just uphold the Council's diktats they are totally immune to any common sense or logic . Parasites every one.

And why does an expat get that worked up about it anyway, ffs?

Just a reminder to DM readers that it's best to read the story, rather than just look at the pictures, before you get angry. Although on second thoughts, maybe the DM could save money by not bothering with any words, and just have pages and pages of photos. That way you could glance at a picture, jump to an ill-informed conclusion, and save the DM money into the bargain. Result!

The Mail often plays on the inability of Mailites to read an entire story. Most just scan the headline, first 2 sentences and look at the pictures. They lack the ability to hold their concentration any longer than that. The Mail abuses their stupidity by placing all the lies and deceit where they know their brain dead readers will see it. The rebuttal of the entire story comes at the end and they know their average reader will never get there. This story seems to be a total piss take of their readers though and I'm sure the sub editors had a little bet to see if the readers would fail to understand the story even if the headline made the timeline of events very, very clear.

Caught on camera, the private postal staff who drop, throw and kick your online parcels
Emphasis mine there, as it refers to UK Mail, a private company who are not Royal Mail. And yet...

This is why I don't use royal mial its disgusting they should sack all the staff - I haven't been able to find a job for 10 years and could do this

After looking at this carry on the sooner the Post Office is privatised with decent management installed the better, if these so called workers lose their jobs they thoroughly deserve it.

AKA the Paragraph 19 effect (I think the name was coined by Ben Goldacre, but it's widely used) where the story proceeds on a less-than-truthful course for 18 paragraphs, then reveals that it was all bollocks in the last para. Much used in newspapers because journos know that a certain sort of reader never reads to the end.

The odd thing is that in both the lamppost story and the one about courier staff kicking parcels around, the facts for once aren't hidden in paragraph 19 but are there in the headline, and a hefty proportion of Mail commenters are still totally failing to get the point. It has to be the case that they barely glance at the story at all and block out anything that doesn't fit in with their prejudices before they get down to commenting. Clearly the Mail doesn't need to go to all the trouble of burying the facts, their loyal readers aren't going to take them in wherever they're placed in the report.

Have they changed the headline? They do that.

This should be in the pointless story thread. Women builds drive then applies to council for access.

It looks like it's about what the thread title says it is about to me. Mind you, I'm reading it on a Mac...

Judging by the comments, no.
