No, they like to publicly criticise far-right groups, while privately saying "Mind you, they've got a point about..."

I tried to stick with things that both the paper and the mailites agree on, but in the case of nazis the paper says one thing and the commenters another, so I went with the paper's stance rather than the reader's. Plus, it's hard to tell what the actual mailite stance is, as the BNP and so on troll the comments. It's only as high a trump as it is because of the rarity, and the fact that the mail does "serious exposes" on them from time to time, which it does with "terrorist" muslims but not, for example, for wheelie bins.
As for the non-violent ones, the mail whines about them being drunken louts who do nazi salutes which brings up the whole "my dad died in the war fighting them, you rotter", and as we all know Our Boys are deserving or respect at all times, even when they go round massacring people and bullying their colleagues to the point of suicide.

I basically think it is a class thing. The EDL are disliked because they are working class, but Mailites nod in agreement with fascists like Hitchens because everyone knows they are talking sense.

Pretty much. It's why non-violent fascists are so far down the list. They're only a minor irritation compared to wheelie bins and single mums.

I've always got the impression that the Mail would be all behind the BNP, if only they smartened themselves up a bit, stopped saying "n*****r" quite so much, and instead of sending dogshit through black/brown people's front doors, stuck to ordering pizzas in their name, leaving snide little notes under their car wipers, blanking them in the local pub and slashing their tyres in the dead of night. You know, like respectable suburban middle class people do.

It's been mentioned a million times, but most of the core BNP policies (even Griffin's own "A bit of seasoning to add to the flavour" attitude against 100% repatriation - we need our Indian and Chinese restaurants after all) are basically Mail editorial writ large.

Part of me knows that it's because journalists love a good story, and what's better than division, conflict, rioting and civil unrest? They stir it up and back away at the crucial moment, just short of coming out and outright backing the far right. They then can claim that they're not encouraging it, merely reporting it. However as this and other blogs have repeatedly shown, they are encouraging it. Thank God the common consensus* seems to be coming round that newspapers are no longer about news and instead are all about opinion.

*OK, at least 3 books I've read recently (including one called 'Print is Dead', the authors pointing out, Sideshow Bob-style, they're fully aware of the irony of a book with that title), several blogs, St Charlton of Brooker, and quite a few think-pieces and letters in the more serious papers.

The Conservative party conference sketch from "Not The Nine O'Clock News" just popped into my head there ("I'm not racist, I like curry, but now that we've got the recipe we can send the bastards back!"), which pretty much sums up the Mail. A lot of its readers would probably watch that and agree with it without realising it was taking the piss out of them.

This reader can't decide who he hates more: minorities or council staff:

Shades of On The Hour's report on inner-city disturbances there: "...and Kidderminster was found abandoned in a hedge."

The name seems familiar, I did wonder if that was someone on here messing about.

How about these two:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1385492/Boy-wears-skirt-school-uniform-row-rule-says-wear-shorts.html
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1385591/Boy-12-banned-school-cornrow-hairstyle-takes-battle-High-Court.html

Both 12 year-old boys. Both breaking their schools' uniform policies. Both kicking up a fuss. No comments yet, but I have a suspicion that one of them might been seen rather more favourably by the mailites...
