Why does the Daily Fail insist on telling us that any female venturing out of the front door is 'stepping out'?
We have yet another two today:

Susan Sarandon can't stop smiling as she steps out again with her rumoured toyboy

Lily Allen steps out for the first time since she tragically lost her baby

What the fuck is 'stepping out'?
:?

You read my mind - that one's been really irritating me this week. Given that it has undertones of someone showing themselves off, it seems particularly inapposite in relation to Lily Allen.

Stepping out used to be a nice way of saying seeing, possibly shagging. It's relevance in the Lilli Allen story is beyond me.

That's what I thought it meant and I rather like it.

Presumably Lily Allen was wearing something when she was spotted, I'm surpised she wasn't "revealling" her new look for the first time since the tragic death of her baby.

Takes up less space than "Is seen in public with...".

Other than the rather old-fashioned nature of the phrase, my issue with it is that it makes any sighting of a celeb beyond their own front door equivalent to attending a film premiere. Which is handy as it then means the celeb can be slated for not being dolled up to the nines when they're popping out for a pint of milk.

For me, the phrase seems to emphasise the prowling, stalking nature of the paps. 'Stepping out' means stepping out of their homes, and the photographers are lurking there ready to pounce.

I believe that the etymology of 'stepping out' is the same as 'promenading' - simply going out to see and be seen, sashaying and meeting people.
Therefore 'going out with' and 'stepping out with' earned the meaning of the early stages of courtship, prior to 'giving a good seeing to', 'getting married' and 'not tonight, I've got a headache'.

So, in the Mail sense, 'stepping out' would mean going out to be seen, or to be public, rather than going out to the shops.

Yes Malcolm, that's my issue with it. It should mean what you say, but it is used to mean any sighting of a celeb outside their own home.

Where does "romp" fit in, then?

That's a good seeing to in Mailworld, possibly with more than one Jeremy involved.

They've managed three in one day!!

But then again Kelly Brook isn't most people - as she proved last night.
Stepping out in a black mini dress, bare legs and carrying her coat instead of wearing it, the star flicked her hair and gave the ever-present paparazzi a dazzling smile.

:D
