Ought to be in Norwich.

But who, in their right mind, would name a street 'Letsby Avenue'?

People who name their kids Mike Hunt I suppose...

Near me Villedieu les Poeles (God's town of the frying pans) and Chevreville (Goat town). Oh, and La Chienne (bitch).

Norway has pretty good form for amusing place names also.

A small town just outside Trondheim, near the airport, is called Hell. Hønefoss, not too far outside Oslo Translates as Chicken Waterfall. Styggedalen (Ugly Valley). A fishing village in Sogn is called Kunta, there's a village named Sjukehusdræpen, which in some accents is a homophone of 'Hospital Death'.

Personally I take a giggle everytime I pass the signpost to Sørås around here, which just means South Hill, but I can't help but read Sore Ass everytime....

I always admire the sheer doggedness of the individual who, year after year, returns to modify all of the numerous signs from the A1 north of Newcastle showing the various routes that lead to Shilbottle.

I do like to think it is all the one person, who had a very, very unhappy childhood there and just isn't able to move on...

The other half has just reminded me of a street we drove past when staying with the 'rellos' in Australia

That's reasonably absurd. However I note that it is situated in the community of Kippa Ring - I'm sure that's in Roger's Profanisaurus.

Done as a joke apparently.

There were no objections from local residents either, to the choice of Letsby Avenue for the quarter-mile road in which the only building is a police station.

The Mumbles near Swansea is named after the two allegedly breast shaped rocks which become islands at high tide. The precise etymology of the name is unclear some say Latin - mamillae, others French - mamelles. Romans or Normans, either way, it's breasts.

I can't help feeling that a sailor would have needed to be at sea an awlful long time to make him think those looked like breasts. Mind you they're more plausible than the Mumbles.

I take your point, not least because there are three of them.

Puts me in mind of Eccentrica Gallumbits.

Reminds me of a line in "The Lost Continent" where Bryson's talking about the Grand Tetons mountains, and how you'd have to be pretty whacked out and exhausted to make the connection with a pair of breasts: "I'd been on the road for [however long]. They looked like tits to me."
