Couldn't see a thread for today's Headline for the Mail's paper version so here we go....

Think it's important to recognise the significance of the Front Page Headline (esp on Sundays), as this is the story which is going to grab the most attention. Thus, the FPH is very influential in it's supply to the Dacre Drip should the FPH happen to be a "Drip story". Plus, people who don't actually buy the Mail are potentially susceptible to the effects of the Front Page drip (e.g. Every time someone fills up with petrol, goes to a local shop with a news stand, waiting rooms etc). The obvious question being, on any given day, "how does this headline feed "The Dacre Drip?" or "Dacre's Dystopia" - If at all.

This is the online version of today's FPH:

Now they want to tax jewellery: New Lib Dem wealth plan to target ALL assets - including buy-to-let homes

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... homes.html

Para 19:
Quote:
A Lib Dem spokesman last night said the tax ideas would be discussed by the party, but insisted they were not yet approved policy.

Top rated comment:
Quote:
So basically, if you come from a poor background like myself, scrape through school, manage to find employment, work really hard and get yourself off that dreadful Council owned estate and find yourself a better life through hard work and determination, the Lib Dems then come along and decide you don't deserve nice things and tax you to death so you're put back were you belong and in your place!!- Anopinion, Huddersfield, United Kingdom, 16/2/2013 22:41 3167

Which has been picked up by other news outlets:
http://news.sky.com/story/1053220/lib-d ... -heirlooms (check out the comments section)
Quote:
MP Tessa Munt, who helped draw up the consultation paper, told the Mail on Sunday it was an "interesting idea".

The "They Live" type message being pumped out to The Drip here is the implication this will affect "Hard working taxpayers" above tax-dodging millionaires like Rothermere who have inherited their fortune. This also supports Dacre's "free market" libertarian notion that "tax is theft", all whilst simultaneously running other stories demonising "scroungers" (including the hardworking low-paid). This methinks is the Dacre Ethic, and also supports the conflict perspective of pitting the ""have-nots" and "don't want you to have eithers" against each other.

Things that begin with "Now" again.

The Dacre drip trying to emphasize how the middle class's right to hold on to property is slowly being eroded by the state.

Knee-jerk "Let's hate judges who dare to enforce the law as passed by Parliament rather than as Theresa May wishes it was" story.

Knee-jerk "Let's condemn Hugh Grant for having children out of wedlock, by the way he was nasty about us in front of Leveson" story.

Knee-jerk "Let's hate Lib Dems" story.

Yes, full Dacre drip in action, MoS editor earned his crust faithfully for another week.

Yup. Plus there's a good old dose of the beauty-myth (polished surfaces) juxtaposed with images & suggestions of wealth (Lottery).

Whilst this could be interpreted as a Lib Dem fuck-up, the way the Mail have presented the item on the FPH, "THEY" could just about apply to anyone in the "liberal elite".

I read that Mantel piece at the weekend and it is indeed spot-on. What the Mail doesn't mention, of course, is that the remarks about Kate are just part of the whole thing, which is more about royal women and their purpose in general. I'm surprised they didn't also mention Mantel's comments on Diana somewhere on the front page.

Definitely feeding the Drip though - right at the beginning we are told she has 'used her position among the novel-writing elite' - ie, she doesn't live in the real world or do a real job. Er, much like Kate really then.

The majority of the comments seem to focus on how Mantel looks (conveniently ignoring that that is in any event the product of ill health). Interesting that they can't see that, when the only argument you can produce is based on someone's appearance, you've lost the argument.

Mail vs Successful women writers, definitely. See also J.K Rowling, Mary Beard, sure there must be others.

Entirely understandable. If I were one of the degraded slave hacks who have to write these things, I'm sure I'd nurture a seething resentment against succesful and respected writers who aren't at the beck and call of scum like Dacre.
