Plus it's two-a-side rather than six.

Totally different disciplines, i would imagine.

I'm waiting for the snotty comments that diving isn't a real sport. After all, I'm sure a lot of people were only watching tonight to see Tom Daley in minuscule speedos.

Top boxers and officials lift the lid on the 'grubby' and 'sexist' women’s professional game in the US, where fighters are exploited, prize money doesn’t even cover the cost of air fares and top fighters must resort to posing in nude mags

Yes, that's a Mail journalist complaining that another profession is grubby and sexist.

There's no mention in the story of boxers having to pose in nude mags. That seems to be wishful thinking on the part of the sub-editor. On the contrary, the article suggests that there are nude models who might be made to box.

There's a Simon and Garfunkel song in that, I think.

All sounds very unlikely to me, boxers aren't usually noted for their looks.

Did I mention I used to box.

Well, going with the theme of that Daily Mash article a couple of pages back, I don't get the Mail/readers' fascination with the beach volleyball at all. If you're that desperate to see some attractive women in skimpy clothes, there are much easier ways than watching an event that comes round every 4 years. The Mail website would be a start.

Feel free to correct me if I'm overlooking something with the sport, but it does seem a bit pointless to me. I don't doubt the skill of the athletes, but it seems like a gimmick when they have regular volleyball aswell.

You might as well say why bother with doubles tennis, or why have the 10,000m when we've got the 100.

I haven't play volleyball since I was at school and I've never played beach volleyball but I imagine that playing on sand makes the game substantially different and harder.

Yeah fair point. Like I said, I don't know much about volleyball so wasn't sure about the rules and if I was overlooking something. Didn't know it was also two players as opposed to six, I stand corrected!

At the opposite end of the Mailite woman-spectrum from beach volleyball players:

There's always one! Belarus female shot putter is stripped of gold medal after failing drugs test

Sixty-three of the first 100 comments are trans- or homophobic.

Lovely.

ETA: Hypocrisy special. From a separate article:

Quote:
The reasons why women don't take part in sport include lack of time while others say they are too embarrassed to be seen getting hot and sweaty. Others would rather be thin than fit. As some sections of the media often sell a skinny look as ideal, looking toned and muscular is often perceived as being butch and unfeminine.

The same article criticises the media for promoting reality tv stars, rather than sportswomen, as role models to girls. The lead story on the sidebar is about Kim Kardashian.
