Am I the only one who finds the Beach Volleyball kit absolutely ridiculous?

Hot pants and sports bras, maybe, but teeny-tiny bottoms? Oy.

No, I'm 100% with you.
There's clearly a Blatter (or maybe just a fratboy) behind the whole thing.

I find the concept of Beach Volleyball as an Olympic sport fairly ridiculous.

Well, the costumes ARE ridiculous, methinks. One of them explains that they're practical in terms of not getting clogged up with sand, but again, the men don't seem to experience that difficulty. Wonder why they don't just play in the bare scud and have done with it :

What's truly absurd is the process used to decide what does or doesn't constitute an Olympic sport:

Quote:
In order for a sport or discipline to be considered for inclusion in the list of Summer Olympics sports, it must be widely practised in at least 75 countries, spread over four continents. Women's sports or disciplines may be considered if practised in at least 50 countries.

How vague is the expression "widely practised"? Once the criteria have been met, a vote is then taken by the notoriously incorruptible IOC. For 2012, two sports (baseball and softball) have been dropped from the programme, while golf and men's rugby sevens were not voted for inclusion until 2016.

Whatever the sport, the competitors dedicate a lot of time and effort to preparing for it, and deserve respectful coverage in the media.

The Guardian has something on some athletics person calling Jessica Ennis "fat".

Any sign of that in the Mail yet?

Compared to a Marathon runner perhaps.
Bear in mind that she does Shot Putting and Javelin throwing.
It's difficult to do those disciplines with a BMI of 15.

Bien sûr, most of it cribbed from the Guardian:

If the size of thighs is important then Chris Hoy is a beached whale...

Women's Rugby Sevens as well. Look forward to the Olympic Sportswomen bashing coming up when they feature in the papers!

They're in the 'news' again, via this syntactically garbled headline:

Olympic beach volleyballers women told they can cover up because of the cool summer

I heard a rumour that there is a mens volley ball competition - surely not!

Familiar fat/ugly bashing in the comments, plus a charming homophobic insult:

Why have the four men in the pictures got bra tops on?

We're fed up with obsession about our skimpy outfits, say scantily-clad GB girls

What the volleyball players say:
Quote:
The players said their family and friends hated the fact that they were recognised only for wearing bikinis.

‘They find it really upsetting,’ Miss Mullin said. ‘They say to me, “How can they still be talking about your bikinis? Don’t they understand how hard you work?”

What the Mail says:
Quote:
Patriotic: Team GB star Shauna Mullin used the training session to show off her red, white and blue fingernails

What the readers say:
Quote:
I bet none of these girls will be needing any of those 150,000 condoms. They not even attractive get over yourselves. They need the skimpy outfits to keep our eyes away from their uglay faces.
