The whole point of a political cartoon isn't that it's funny, it's that it makes a significant social or political point. Which Thomas shies away from almost every time. He simply comments that a situation exists, not on the causes or ramifications of a situation.

Spot on, although he was only too happy to comment on the cause of any given situation when Gordon Brown was PM

Sometimes, but not usually with any depth.

I think that what needs to be taken into consideration is that the average Express reader is of above average age, easily confused and frightened, very conscious of their social status (trans. raging snob) and a bit thick.

The purpose of PT's cartoon is not to offer a barbed commentary on world events, but to reassure the reader. Look, there's the queen voicing an opinion remarkably similar to the one the editorial espouses, and you likely have. Look, there's some cartoon people getting confused and frightened by that headline that set out to confuse and frighten you. Look, there's a disembodied voice chiming in on the EU wasting money or getting ideas above their station. Or even better, Prince Harry. You are not alone. Look, nice people in their nice and well-appointed kitchen think like we want you to do. Horrible people you don't want to be associated with are a bit thick. Remember, our and your view is the right one. You are not alone.

I don't disagree. I just think that means that there is absolutely no way that Thomas can be considered a political cartoonist - any more than Andy Capp or Fred Basset are political cartoons. And they are better drawn and more amusing.

That's an ultra-scrunched London.

Which tube stop do you get off at to go to those rolling hills behind Westminster?

Right, so... the coalition parties are taking a hammering in the local elections, there's a mayoral contest in London, a presidential election in France, Chinese/US diplomatic relations, Jeremy Hunt is still paddling up a Nile of shit, provocative TV adverts by the Argentine government... and he's banging on about some non-story involving Tony Blair?

christ, there is the makings of a half decent cartoon somewhere in there, if only pt could actually draw a face in the clouds rather than a giant white balloon 100ft from the ground, and why the hell is london a squidged between some rural hills? it's specifically a story about politics, it should be looming over parlament.

What is that in between the buildings? Has the Gherkin grown to humungous size and then toppled over?

I thought it was the Olympic stadium. Because it is, of course, around a mile in width.

Yep deffo the olympic bowl.
Cleverly rescaled so the marathon is a single lap.

Your "doctor's" perscription? Why on earth would a doctor be giving his own medicine to someone else?
