The Peephole vs Charlotte Church

This could be interesting - The People allegedly makes up a story about Charlotte Church and features it prominently in the newspaper; when CC complains, they run an apology but because the paper neither gave the apology due prominence or explained how it came about, the libel case is continuing.

The apology is quite pathetic:

"On November 6, 2011, we said Charlotte Church had proposed marriage to Jonathan Powell at a boozy karaoke night at the Robin Hood pub in Cardiff. We were misinformed.

On the night in question Ms Church and Mr Powell were performing a gig at studios in Pentyrch, Cardiff and Ms Church did not propose that night or at all.

We are happy to set the record straight and we apologise for our mistake."

That's all right then. I think if I was Charlotte, I may want a bit more of an explanation.

What 'evidence' did The People present for this proposal?

As far as I can see, there are two explanations:

1) People journalist made the whole thing up; or

2) Liar/fantasist made the whole thing up, sold the story to the People and they didn't bother to check.

Both are quite feasible, sadly.

They are a couple. It was certainly a mistake, but what's libellous about the story?

Having done a search of 'The People's' web site it does look like they have printed quite a few false stories about her over the last couple of years so may be she has finally decided that enough is enough.

Her real objection over the story may be more to do over claims she was drunk rather than the proposal part. Concert promoters and TV producers may be reluctant to hire her if they get the impression that she is frequently getting drunk.

If only they were still permitted to hack her mobile this could all be cleared up so easily.

Knowing journos, there was probably more than a hint that she proposed out of desperation because he was never going to propose to her.
