No it isn't a spoof.
He is now claiming that he 'misspoke' - yeah, right. He also called for an end for support for contraception/morning after pill.

Someone on Twitter complained that Republican fucktards had medieval views.
I'd like to point out that medieval doctors (and certainly medieval women) had a clearer idea of the processes of conception than this utter fuckwit.

As Mrs A pointed out, what do you expect, it's Missouri, and anyway Republican American standards of science education are not legendarily high.

This Murrikan defence of having "misspoke" - before you even get to it not even being recognisably a legitimate word in the English language - really just means "I was talking bollocks", but somehow it looks to imply a kind of absolution of responsibility for having talked bollocks.

Time people started to call Murrikan politicians (and yes, I do mean Hilary bloody Clinton too) out on this and start asking them to accept responsibility for being wrong and providing a full retraction.

First amendment protection. The freedom to speak freely means you have the right to spew utter bollocks without having to accept responsibility for what you say.

First amendment only lets you spout bollocks. Media who are in the thrall of imbecile politicians and people who have retreated so far from reason as to make David Icke look normal let them get away with it - that and the intellectual relativism which seems to permeate the USA.

The media are protected by the first amendment over here. Which is why we end up with crap like Fox and, to be frank, MSNBC.

In fact it's in the text.

Quote:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

There would be no Leveson style inquiry in the US. The worst that would have happened would be criminal prosecutions for journalists who break privacy laws.

I get all that. My point is that critics of this idiot have first-amendment rights as well, to call him out on his comments. But the media don't do it, very often other politicians don't do it, and ignorance continues to hold sway.

Correct. When you call out a politician for a bare faced lie they usually react by getting aggressive. This is viewed as being strong and it appeals to their supporters.

That's why repugs want to stop national public radio funding. As it is the last none biased media outlet in the US (with perhaps the exception of some newer internet shows and, ironically, Jon Stewart on the comedy channel).

Of course if you disagree with a right winger in the US then you are automatically a communist. NPR is a communist organisation a bit like the BBC is a left organisation.

The problem in the US is that money can buy you a louder voice. The ad attacks for the November election have already started. The first amendment does not guarantee equal access to transmission media for all opinions. That is one of its failings.

They could start by publically ridculing that weasel phrase every time it's deployed. Just what does "I mis-spoke" actually mean, anyway?

a) I lied.
b) I was wrong.
c) I exaggerated.
d) I'm a fucking idiot.
e) I'm sorry.
f) I wish to recant what I said.

Now it seems to me that all of the above are what the phrase "I mis-spoke" SHOULD mean, but that somehow, it means none of them. It's a sort of catch-all, recantation without actually recanting that Murrikan politicians think they can use to just brush embarassing foot-in-mouth episodes under the rug. A sort of "move right along there's nothing to see" sort of greasy, weaselling out.

It also seems to me that people ought to be able to see through this crapola when it's trotted out - and maybe Rob can help us here and let us know whether that's the case.

Either way, the tossers that come out with the "mis-spoke" cobblers need to start getting nailed to the wall for it.

There are large swathes of this country who would actually think he made a valid point.

Paul Ryan is being nice about him.....

http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/ ... e-race.php

Paul Ryan wants to redefine rape as forcible rape in order for women to get abortions and not be forced to carry their rapist's babies to term.

http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/0 ... fine-rape/

So there you go. There are enough fuckwits out here who would actually support him for saying such a stupid thing.

It really is that simple.
