The DM's throwing as much against the shooter as they've got.

I was watching Washington Journal on BBC Parliament earlier. You might want to catch it on iPlayer - it's got a substantial amount of the sentiments I just mentioned, along with a couple of Commie-bashing, Palin-worshipping loonies who helpfully show up their own cause.

There was also this.

Good response I heard to 'National SOCIALIST' bullshit.

The Nazis called themselves socialist, but then the German Democratic Republic said it was democratic.

It's amazing how people don't get that words sometimes, just SOMETIMES, aren't honestly used, or that there are different conceptions of such terms.

If, indeed, the guy turns out to be a 'lefty' (ignoring the fact Communism is abhorrent to many lefties, but since when was nuance ever a factor of politics any more), it doesn't change the fact that libertarian sentiment in the USA is seemingly laced with violent rhetoric and anger (all the while being quietly funded by very un-libertarian people) that is simply wound up and up and left to steam, all for political ends.

Excellent article. Just bloody shows the fools that you can be Republican and strident without all this overly aggressive rubbish. You can disagree with health care and NOT call Obama a wannabe-mass murderer, and so on.

It's infuriating, in the USA and here, that it seems people simply cannot comprehend that you can hold a position without following, whole-hog, the entire political movement of which your view is a part.

It's also infuriating when idiots play tit-for-tat as though it clears their own 'side':

Some of the comments are unbelievable - the USA gave Europe democracy? I don't know where to start debunking that one, apart from maybe the Ancient Greeks...

You can argue this one quite seriously, as the American Declaration of Independence directly informed the French Revolution, and particularly the Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen; and the USA sent advisers and support to the revolutionaries of 1789.

Of course, the intellectual seed corn of the American Revolution came from European philosophers such as Rousseau...
I certainly won't argue with you Malcolm bout the American involvement in the French Revolution, but my point would be that (a) democracy was not something that organically came about in the USA around the time of the American Revolution, nor before or after it, it has existed in many civilisations long, long before the 18th century, and (b) that the support in the French Revolution didn't lead to any spread of democracy around Europe in the immediate aftermath. It generally took wars in the 19th or 20th century, or the end of the Cold War to bring about democratic changes in many European countries we see today while a few like Slovenia transformed in a fairly bloodless fashion. It's also not as if the raison d'etre of USA foreign policy over time has been to install or uphold democracy in other parts of the world when it goes contrary to vested American interests (not that some European countries during colonial eras were free of such accusations themselves).

The shooting of Congresswoman Giffords and the people next to her who have been fatially wounded to me has parallels to the Drumcree dispute in the 1990's. Around July 1998 when they whole thing was threatening to spiral out of control at Drumcree itself, three young brothers were burned to death in the house they lived in from a sectarian attack. That led to a massive elephant in the room that the Orange Order could not ignore, though they could never publicly bring themselves to say so, namely that their protest at not being allowed to have a parade on the Garvaghy Road in Portadown saw it turned into a focal point for loyalist paramilitaries as the perfect excuse for them on the fringes of their ceasefire, especially for Billy Wright and his supporters. They effectively threatened to turn the place into one with bloodshed with slurry tankers filled with petrol, machine guns, explosive devices etc. and the Orange Order did nothing to distance themselves from and at times some of the main men involved were happy enough to be photographed with Loyalists.

There had been a related murder two years previously, but this murder of three young boys brought it to a head - the elephant shone on to those in the Orange Order that their words, threats and actions inspired the murderer to commit his actions. There was no way that the protests that were becoming an annual Summer feature could remain credible and they had to stand down, although these days a protest still remains and applications to parade on the Garvaghy Road are still made, but it's all very low key these days.

About a month after this, the Omagh bombing took place, and the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland said enough was enough. Fringe loyalists and republicans were effectively driven out from having any significant support in communities, although Billy Wright's reign of terror continued until after his death.

The exact motive of Loughner (suspect for now, but seems pretty certain to be the person who carried out the shooting) has yet to be identified, but at least being in custody alive and able bodied can see him being interrogated as to his exact motives, not that I recommend waterboarding him. If it turns out that he was inspired to take his actions like he did because of the words of political or media personalities, there will be hell to pay. However, looking at the social media evidence gathered up, the guy seems to be mentally unstable in a big way and I wouldn't be surprised if an insanity plea is entered, wherever he faces a state or federal courtroom.

As I recall, he was the Tea Party's Chief Strategist.

The Glenn Beck Conspiracy Theory Generator

To be fair, many of the quotes generated wouldn't look out of place in a Richard Littlejohn column!

Beck's latest target for his neanderthals to threaten: a highly dangerous 78 year old woman.
