I've noticed a few stories recently in the Mail where there is a story which mentions to price of the house the person lives/lived in, when it has nothing to do with the story. One was a few weeks ago about a lady who died from a drug overdose on holiday and her family (in the £200,000 house) were to upset to talk, why even mention the house price? There is also another story about the lady attacked by a burglar (in her £350,00 house) who needed sugery to ensure her unborn baby was ok. In what single way does any of these stories link into the house price of the house they live/d in, why not just say 'nice middle class people' instead of quoting their house value.

The Mail sets great store about someone's character by the value of their property. I would guess that the valuation is based on a google search rather than a RICS' valuation.

There is a pejorative form of this as well. F'rinstance, 'blonde, twice divorced mother of three' equals a slapper.

Yeah, its more Mail glibertarianism. You can tell the moral worth of someone by how much their house is worth. It really is rather shallow and pathetic.

CC-
mother of none, £200,000 detached house.

House price, along with age, and (if female) hair colour and marital status, are in tabloid-land absolutely vital pieces of information in any news story.

Children/teens and women are often introduced due to their family/marital status, with a name usually following after this.

Still the women who died of the drug overdose wasen't in her own home, it was her parents home (the one were the house price was mentioned), so by mentioning house price in that story it was streching it quite far.

check out this condescending header ...about the olympic sailing girls..

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -well.html

It really makes you feel so proud of your country. Sadly, these young people have had little support from the Nulab government of Bliars (What was he doing there with the wicked witch I hope the taxpayers didn't have to fork out for him. All the millions he is now raking in)They have do it by grit and determination. Not by lottery funding pittance (shame on you, Quangoes who would rather give the lottery money to Latin American and overseas countries for stupid ideas). We don't hear enough about these young people, only the yobs that stab and do harm to others. It has been a pleasure watching you all.

Has anyone asked why Team GB's female athletes are so ugly and flat-chested? They're not exactly quality masturbatory material for the average Daily Mail reader.

One might suggest that the reason "ann, london" hears so much about "the yobs that stab and do harm to others" is that she reads the Mail.

When you reach the peak of fitness you tend to loose alot of fat (isn't it about 4-6% of some Olympic athletes bodies are fat when an average is probably about 4 times that much) and the muscles develop. Hormones, inc. sex hormones, may also be altered by high level training, training hard can sometimes lead to skipped or a lack of menstruation so your point may have a scientific basis to it, can't say much for the ugly bit though.

I'm sure it doesn't happen like this, but I can't get rid of a mental image of a Mail journalist phoning up these people who have just experienced a horrific tragedy and saying "Sorry to intrude on your grief, but I have a very important question. How much is your house worth?"
