Robinson says Hammond now moving to defence, Justine Greening replacing Hammond.

While he wasn't a politician, Cameron didn't want to lose Andy Coulson either.

Hammond has been one of the Tories few competent performers always being wheeled out when the shit is about to hit the fan but it is hard to see how he can perform that role while running a department like Defence. Presumably Chris Grayling will now become chief fire fighter for the govt but he seems to have been very low profile over the last couple of years.

BBC now asking if Liam Fox lacked "political antennae".

Ming Campbell reckons that Fox has had his judgement obscured by the job. Yeah, you can't expect a busy man not to tell lies. Try that one with your tax return.

Here comes a "defence analysis" mentioning a "£35bn black hole". A figure that hasn't been remotely stood up by anyone, to my knowledge.

BBC again don't question it.

And the same bullshitting defence cunt reckons we've seen "trial by media". No, we haven't. We've seen a self-righteous minister caught lying, and not getting the deference that he and defence establishment came to expect.

Grayling is shite. Damian Green (who I'm told has done sod all for his constituency) is the best media performer.

The rats may have lost Fox but, with the help of the BBC, they've won the media war.

Peter Bone just tried the old "parents of troops will think this is a disgrace" line.

He was referring to the media, not to Fox.

Wiki on Bone:

Bone was one of 3 new MPs specifically mentioned who boosted “their ratings on the internet by saying very little, very often.” Amongst his 109 “speeches” was one which ran to three short sentences in which he told fellow MPs that the sub-postmaster in Little Irchester had “the only business in the village”.

He is a member of the socially conservative Cornerstone Group and in a 2007 report, he argued that the NHS "would not be out of place in Stalin's Russia". Bone has signed several Early Day Motions supporting Homoeopathy. He has voted to lower the abortion time limit to twelve weeks and voted against abolishing the offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel. The abortion time limit vote failed and the blasphemy vote passed.

Bone is also a Member of the 1922 Committee and has been an Executive Member since 2007. He has campaigned on a number of issues including road traffic deaths, white slavery and underfunding of the NHS in Northamptonshire.

In March 2009 Bone was a key speaker opposing the use of the House of Commons by the UK Youth Parliament.[

He's a cunt. Hiding behind troops is a new low though.

Can you recall him arguing we should give Bob Ainsworth an easy time because we were at war?

It's an incredibly patronising view of soldiers and their families. If I were a soldier, I'd think "this is dodgy as fuck. I've been working for a bloke who's as interested in Israel and America as Britain". Or maybe "Fox is all right. Don't reckon he did anything wrong. But I'm not impressed he couldn't take a bit of hostile press, when I'm expected to charge headlong into machine gunfire".

Oh christ, I watched some of that live. Philip Davies went on for about an hour. To be fair to him, he had a proper go over phone hacking. I've yet to see Bone do anything like that.

Justine Greening? They'd be better off drafting in Jonathan Greening...

A few of the contributors on the Shite Minds section of the Mail seem to be arguing that Cameron should have appointed David Davies as defence secretary to appease the Right wing of the party. What a wonderful idea pick the someone to appease the headbangers rather than someone who could actually do the job well.

One slightl problem I could see with Hammond is that in the past he has often used unpaid interns to do much of his admin and research work in the commons I wonder if this could now come back to haunt him?
