I do think we should separate the civil and religious totally, it seems wrong that if you get married in a church you don't have to do anything extra

But you do - that's why the Bride & Groom, best man, bridesmaids etc (and in our case comedy gay vicar) go into the little registry room in the vestry to sign the book. That's the separate, civil, and binding, part. Just that no-one thinks of it that way.

Ahhhh, see I wondered what they did back there, So can you do that in a temple or Mosque? And do vicars, comedy gay or otherwise, automatically get the right to do the civil bit, or do they apply and get a licence just like any registrar?

According to the Graun, the Tories were telling a whole heap of shit in terms of their support for the legalisation of civil same-sex marriages.

Opening it up to votes? Jesus fucking Christ that's a U-Turn.

Interestingly this came up a few days ago, but hasn't been much reported until Cleggy piped up. It looks as though Dave reckons he can play off his backwoodsmen, look progressive and lose a vote. He looks weak on the one hand, but fair and balanced on the other. What he is, of course, is a pusillanimous cynic.

So Cameron's such a nice gay-friendly chap that he can't even be bothered to have a standard whipped vote on it.

I just thought of something. If Cammers puts it to the vote and it doesn't pass, then all another party has to do to try and get the "gay vote" (or, should I say, the vote of anyone who gives a toss) is put it in their manifesto that it will be legalised with no further public consultation or whatever.

Serious question - is there a 'gay vote'? I think Cam's calculations may rest on him thinking that there isn't, and that people vote for other reasons, to do with values and beliefs. I'm not sure he's right, but I've never seen any signs of a gay bloc.

I think the Tories also believe that only gays will vote for gay marriage, ignoring huge numbers of straights who are also concerned with equality and fairness.

It's possible.

I'm not sure there's a "gay vote" as such, but if you appeal to minority groups on certain topics (as a certain three-cheeked arsehole did in Bradford recently) then you can try and gain their votes. It's entirely possible that Labour, Green - even the (under Clegg) spineless LibDems - can try and woo those votes by promising to push through a law legalising civil same-sex marriage.

I would also hope that they don't balls it up as the Tories did by having open conflicting views whilst prominent religious figures decried the decision with barely any real defence.

Cammers, Pickles and May backing same-sex marriage was very much a firewall, I think. They did it to try and make themselves look inclusive and supportive, but it's largely backfired on them.

The Tories (and, by extension, the LibDems) are doing a metric fuckton(ne) of damage in this country. They could have tried to salvage their reputation even just a little by pushing through this law/act/whatever without the delays of public consultations, debates and so forth. It's not something that should even be debated. It should just happen.
