They're also playing the immigration card today. Gideon's Budget really has been a bit of a PR disaster, hasn't it? Shame.

You read it first here!

Can anyone tell me why building HS2 and extending Birmingham (which can be doubled in size, fairly painlessly) isn't the obvious solution?

I looked through a single page of comments and found various grotesque comments and an open call to join a white supremacist movement.

Here is a sample comment.

All those who want to live in a "rainbow nation" should move to South Africa, where rape is the national sport and whites live in gated communities surrounded by razor wire.

I want to live in a BRITISH nation.

Wonder what was on the other 24 pages of comments? Sinister stuff.

To be honest I don't know why the Telegraph allows comments on immigration/race-related articles, because they invite a flood of comments from complete lunatics without fail. There are some proper fucking weirdos who comment on that site - eugenicists, neo-Nazis and all sorts. Far more worrying than your average dozy Mailite.

They don't give a fuck. If pushed they'll do some "free speech" shit.
Which mysteriously doesn't extend to burning poppies.

When I read the headline I thought Cameron had fucked our Lord. Right up His arse. That would be a PR disaster.

I nearly got a punch in the nose the other day when someone mechanically went through the motions of wishing me a happy Easter. I said something like, "...erm, ok. You too. Well, actually I don't really do Easter but yeah, thanks". I get the same at Xmas. If people enjoy these events then I'm happy for them but I do wish ignoring them wasn't such a mortal sin. I'd like to leave them as little landmarks in the calendar which help orientate me and mark the passing of time. Beyond that I don't want to participate. I'll turn it on when kiddywinks are involved and enthuse about Santa and chocolate eggs, of course, but beyond that I'm not feeling the pronounced need for shared rituals or whatever it is.

Because I'm dead inside.

Not really

Easter isn't such a big deal as Xmas, though. I know it is for the hard core god botherers, but not generally speaking culturally - nobody's tried to rename it Springterval or anything. As far as I know.

So generally speaking, I find it easy to let it slip by as just a quite welcome public holiday, without any of the social/family pressures that Xmas comes packaged with.

Sounds groovy. I know a bunch of do-gooder arseholes who use it as a saccharine opportunity to clobber me with their niceness credentials. They stand there giving it the "Oh do enjoy Easter!" routine and I know they don't really mean it but this just what they do. They could be spared the effort and I could be spared the chin-music.

We use it as an excuse to buy each other small gifts.

In teaching it's a watershed break as by that time, for most courses, the input is all done. From a teacher's perspective it marks an easing of the workload as we move into revision and exams which means there's less/no prep to be done and suddenly weekends and evenings get freed up. So yes it is something to celebrate.
I also prefer it to Christmas because it doesn't have the huge marketing fest for months before and you can walk around the shops without hearing the same songs again and again.
It's always struck me as odd that Christmas has become the bigger festival as, for Christians, Easter is surely the more important event.

My five year old came home from school the other day and said that he was off school to celebrate when Jesus died.

I dont think he noted the angry twitch I developed as he said it. Time to un-brainwash him.
