Anyone a fan? Whilst I do think we do need more female journalists in the public domain I find a lot of her self-aggrandizing and vapid writing style really quite palpable. Just recently, there was a Twitter storm about her being saved from a speeding taxi in New York by actor Ryan Gosling. She claims she's sick of the furore yet has written two articles for the Indy and Gawker about it. Whilst she did do a lot of good in raising abuse women face online there is much to be desired by her writing at times. (Not that I disagree with a lot of the content).

Her Twitter is hilarious:
Quote:
I'm leaving Twitter until all this bloody fuss dies down. Honestly, it would have been less trouble to get run over.

Yet, she can't help herself just 35 minutes later tweets:

Quote:
Also very important to note that there has been no official response from Gosling's team yet.

She clearly hates the attention and refuses to bring up the situation with Gosling whenever she can.

She's absolutely terrible, a posturing careerist totally devoid of sincerity. The right-winger's 'lefty' stereotype personified. Her response to the UN's Libya bombing campaign was particularly rancid:

She was pretty embarrassing on her TV appearance with BrilloPad playing with a fake cigarette. Her superficial comments on the issue of the day which were challenged by other didn't help.
Not a deep thinker.

I haven't followed the Gosling story but I suspect the Gawker and Indie stories were commissioned. She has, after all, only just been hired by the Indie.

I like her very much. Her writing can still have an unpolished feel to it, but then she is, what, 25? And she gets truly involved in the stuff she campaigns for, be it anti-rape groups or Occupy; she's written about how a commentator needs to be a reporter too, and so far she's kept to that. She's not (yet) content to just sit on her arse in Florida trying to find pithy phrases to fill a column with.

On an irrelevant but related note, I also think she's hot.

Age shouldn't be an excuse for bad writing. After all, the amount of times she references: cigarettes, protests, police, feminism and so forth you feel like there should be a bingo card to tick off. She covers real important issues, but she strikes me as just another vapid Oxford graduate careerist who lacks real political thought.

So you're expecting her to have read everything already?

I've not read her but she was good on Newsnight on the riots and also a couple of other things I've seen.

... and yes she does have a certain je nais se fucking quoi

I know she fits a demand for some readers but it's an article in the New Statesman that I almost never read.

I prefer Owen Jones who is always more reassured on Television and can argue his corner very well.

That depends: I think she's better grounded in feminism than socialism, for example. Also, she's a journalist and commentator more than a political thinker — different skills. Here's a very well-argued critique of trans-phobia: writing that is engaged, vibrant, not vapid or showily provocative at all.

Oh dear, she's upset "America", or something.

You will have read of the spat earlier between these two.

While I'm no fan of Starkey, Penny doesn't come out of it shining either.

She seems to have lost a lot of weight, and dresses very punky now. I much preferred the love-handles look, with the shiny, straining blouses, mmhh    :tribunal'd:

The public-school thing is unfortunate, but hey, that's England; virtually anyone in the public eye ever, went to one of these places, and if she's renouncing and denouncing it, then what's the problem?

Perhaps put some of the screen work on the back-burner, and focus on the writing? If she gets an important book behind her, like Jones has, then maybe she'll command a lot more respect in general.
