We've almost come full circle here. Malcolm was worrying about the open-ended All Souls spec. Now Winegums is talking about someone very bright who didn't get the grade his ability deserved because specs were tight.

To give another example, in our first year we had a patient study project. You had to go see a patient with a chronic illness a few times throughout the year, find out what it's like to have COPD, heart failure, whatever, and write a report on how the patient manages.

The students who did best followed the criteria to the letter. Those who tried to fit the report to their patient, by minimising elements that didn't really fit their patient in order to save words for more pertinent topics, ended up doing worse. Rigidity of assessment helps the unimaginative, which is a shame.

Have a look at Howard Gardner's 'Multiple Intelligences'. I don't buy into it 100% but it helps makes sense of what O'Boogle is saying (and with which I agree).

For exams, I can see that. Are you talking about coursework? That's surprising to me.

I can imagine a "prodigy" being like that, what with stuff being so obvious to them that it wasn't worth stating. But that's not what you're talking about, is it? Just someone who is "very able".

I'm talking about assignments and dissertations, so yes, coursework. Mark schemes are quite rigid, as they need to be. There is no leaway to say that, because someone has tackled the complex issues, that it's ok to skip the fundamentals. In order to pass they need to be able to show that they've met ALL the performance criteria, not skipped the ones they think are bleeding obvious.

Is there a case of knowing the examiner/lecturer a case. I know a few history graduates and they reckoned there was a case of knowing how/what to write to the specific lecturer, rather than giving them you're interpretation of what happened.

I don't know how true that is being from a more equation based course

I definitely think that's an element to some courses. Certainly in medicine your grade is partially based on who's examining you. e.g. when taking a history, some doctors want you to follow the standard formula to the letter, others will want you to tailor the history to the patient.

Champion of the press still dodging FOIA. And O levels apparently forgotten. And Birbalsingh, having identified nee for a school in Lambeth, and failed to find a place in Wandsworth, is now looking at Brent.

So he's created yet another unregulated drainpipe leading from public coffers to the pockets of private "suppliers".

This is exactly it, plus the chance to get some ideologically untainted chaps in to teach our kids. Maybe some City types?
