Eric has been a busy boy today trying to sell his new policy on dealing with problem families but he seems to have been severely undermined by Cameron's spin doctors releasing the story about the PM leaving his daughter behind at a pub after having a few drinks. This lot really don't do joined up government.

120,001 problem families if you include the Camerons leaving their daughter at the boozer.

I heard this on the radio at work and almost shouted "Shut the fuck up you fat cunt" at it. Ahem.

He said something about truancy - correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the middle class kids the worst ones in schools? I'm sure that was a study that came out recently.

No. I speak as one who did his masters' dissertation (distinction) on truancy and reviewed several books for academic journals, wrote policies etc. Truancy is linked to school failure, home stress and poor cultural capital, which are more likely to be working class traits. Interested to read the study if you can identify it.

Could have been an unrelated study, based more on class room behaviour - i.e. middle class kids are more likely to be disruptive.

You might be right about truancy, I'd certainly think you'd know more than me ;) I broached the subject with my mum (WHY DID I DO THAT) and she went on about how it's kids on estates like the one we live on and how they're lazy and how social services come and have to wake them and their parents up in the mornings. :|

I am right.
50+% of all truancy is 'condoned' - known or supported by parents. Middle class kids tend to truant from specific lessons (as a sort of curriculum choice) whereas other truants bunk the whole day.

I'd be really interested to see the study that shows that middle-class kids are the ones misbehaving, as well, as that goes against everything we thought we knew...

I only heard about it on the News Quiz, but the Torygraph has an article on it.

Could be complete BS for all I know.

The article doesn't say that most classroom misbehaviour is down to middle class kids, it says that parents aren't demanding enough from them, that they are spoiled and that can cause problems. And the time-honoured complaint that parents aren't supporting teachers in discipline...

Clearly I wasted all those years reading books and going to tutorials...
All I needed to do was listen to a whiney comic.

Well, like I said, I could be wrong and I probably am (which should come as no surprise).

Nice to see us topping the league:

This surprises me a lot because the Bangladeshi population are generally very family orientated and the kids pretty well behaved for central London. I wonder whether there's a particular problem with kids going to Bangladesh on unauthorised trips. That's indeed a nuisance but not quite the image that "problem families" conjurs up.
