39. Dick Fedorcio, the Head of the MPS Directorate of Public Affairs, duly sought an explanation from Rebekah Brooks (then Wade) who was then editor of the News of the World. The explanation supplied by the News of the World for placing David and I under surveillance was that they were investigating suspicions that we were having an affair with each other. This was utterly nonsensical as we had by then been married for four years, had been together for 11 years and had two children. Our marriage was common knowledge tothe extent that we had even appeared together in Hello! magazine.

40. The News of the World has never supplied a coherent explanation for why wewere piaced under surveillance. Ill 2003, David, together with Dick Fedorcio and Colnmander Andre Baker, met Rebekah Brooks to discuss the matter. She repeated the unconvincing explanation that the News of the World believed we were having an affair. She agreed to iook into Alex Marunchak’s associations
with Rees and Fillery but to my knowledge nothing further was ever said about the subject, indeed Mr Marunchak was subsequently promoted. I believe that the real reason for the News of the World placing us under surveillance was that suspects in the Daniel Morgan nmrder inquiry were using their association with a powerful and well-resourced newspaper to try to intimidateus and so attempt to subvert the investigation.

From The Idler's "Crap Jobs" book (entry 95 - Journalist):

Quote:
The boss was one of those terrifying people who keep you on a piece of elastic. You think they've finished telling you off because they have gone quiet, so you gingerly begin your retreat back to your desk. Then suddenly they will pipe up again and you will move forwards to receive yet more humiliation...but truth never came near the magazine. It was pure sex and celebs, diets and Russell Grant. For example she decided she wanted an interview with Nirvana, which would have been great for me. But she had this idea that Nirvana were a real-life version of Wayne's World, and however much I tried to disabuse her of this notion, she stuck to it. Thankfully there was no way Nirvana wanted to be in this magazine so I never had to ask the question "So, tell me Kurt, about how you got your idea for the band from Wayne's World".

I am reliably informed that the editor in question is Rebekah Brooks (then Wade), when she was in charge of the NOTW's Sun Day magazine.

Given that the police bribing culture is said to go back several years, do we think we can pin anything on Kelvin? Particularly as he is on record in saying he sees nothing wrong with it.

Much as I dislike Wade, this whole story has been rather Daily-Mailed. There is a standing programme for retired police horses to be cared for by private owners. It's not like she was presented with it as a tribute. This vile human being has more than enough about her worthy of criticism, they really don't need to lower themselves to tabloid-esque crap like this.

That said, it's always nice to see someone so detestable being hoist upon their own petard.

if she went through the normal process, fine.

But I'm presuming some copper she wasn't supposed to know very well just gave her a horse.

In the circumstances it's hard not to be cynical.

Also, it's comedy gold.

News is coming in that Rebecca Brooks' horse has just been appointed Minister of State for Work and Pensions, replacing Chris Grayling with immediate effect.

I nicked that joke off someone on the Guardian site The Grayling bit was me though.

I agree, it's a red Herring, one the press pack will gobble up with relish when they should be on the scent of (Just this week):
* A nobbled murder investigation.
* A significant chunk of the Met on the payroll.
* Organised programme of evidence tampering.

I looks as though due process was followed, and I've made it clear, I see this as a minor (if amusing) twist in the tale.

The one detail of the story I did find interesting was the numbers involved.
News at 10 published the numbers per year (About 10, never more than 12).
Given the rarity of this occurring, it's surprising that such a high profile, but well connected person should get a horse.

Anyway, I'll leave this and concentrate on the genuine gangsterism.

Shall we try to detect cause and effect there?

A well connected person with an entire training stables, grooms, vets and so on at her disposal...
Really, nothing to see here, but people are staring at the horse, not the magician's hands.
