News of the World vows action on Milly phone hack claim
News International boss Rebekah Brooks has promised the "strongest possible action" if claims that the phone of Milly Dowler was hacked are proven.

Quote:
"I have to tell you that I am sickened that these events are alleged to have happened," Mrs Brooks wrote.

"Not just because I was editor of the News of the World at the time, but if the accusations are true, the devastating effect on Milly Dowler's family is unforgivable."

She said that she had written to the Dowler family to assure them that the media group, which publishes the News of the World, would "vigorously pursue the truth and that they will be the first to be informed of the outcome of our investigation".

She added: "I hope that you all realise it is inconceivable that I knew - or worse - sanctioned these appalling allegations."

So the Dowlers are supposed to wait for the outcome of News International's investigation? If I were to rob someones house and got caught, can I launch an internal investigation, then?

The Dowlers would be quite right to tell Brooks to shove their latest attempt at a whitewash up Murdoch's corrupt, venal arse.

Yes, it's incredible how the analysis is clouded by "Special case" arguments - nearly all thrown up by NoTW, stable-mates, or other crap hacks.

Another petition, this time from the exellent 38 Degrees, to try to stop Murdoch's takeover of BSkyB.

Gawd know if this stuff works, but we haven't got many other weapons to use against the old bastard.

She should go, at the very least. Surely even her friendship with Cameron won't save her, given that even he has come out pretty strongly against this? Her relationship with Murdoch might save her bacon again, though, sadly.

It's my understanding that the head of a company is responsible in law for any injuries committed by that company, surely emotional damage counts as well? I hope the Dowlers take the feckers for everything they've got, not that that will heal the wounds of having to deal with this on top of their daughter's murder.

According to the BBC, NI will not be contesting the substance of the allegations.

Given the gravity of them, that doesn't surprise me. If the Guardian hadn't been 110% sure, they'd never have gone public for fear of being taken to the cleaners themselves.

So, all that needs to be decided is who knew. Back to the old Coulson question - culpable or incompetent?

Bloody excellent - this will actually hit them where it hurts. The wallet.

On the other end of the scale, this is a bit of truly *outstanding* cuntery - turning a tabloid hacking into a dead girl's voicemail into a BBC bash because they dared to cover the story:

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/david ... -coverage/

Thankfully, even the Torygraph's readers aren't buying it.

Too right they aren't buying it. The Telegraph is getting a real kicking over this one. I think the anti-BBC idealogues will be keeping their heads down for a (short) while.

I bloody hate the way she thinks we are all thick enough to buy that "I knew nothing" rubbish. As has been said in relation to Coulson, if she seriously did not know then she is a totally crap editor, and no-one thinks she was a crap editor.

But what concerns me is that Murdoch will be allowed to get away with offering her up as a sacrificial lamb whilst swanning off with BSkyB. Does anyone seriously doubt that Cameron will let him get away with it?

That is astounding, and going down incredibly badly.
