Local newspapers are wonderful. They tell us so much about ourselves, yet somehow nothing at all. Thought this topic could serve as a repository for our very favourite local newspaper headlines.

Personally, my all-time favourites come from the Somerset Standard, and date from many years ago, so no weblinks: 'Woman held rolling pin during row’; and, the very best, ‘Big fish found in river’

More recently, I enjoyed the Reading Evening Post’s ‘Teen who had sex with a dog to be sentenced’
http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/s/2051 ... _sentenced

They seem particularly concerned about another dog being forced to watch.

The comments on the dog one are good. Some top class punnery from Hugh Janus!

I assume you're aware of the angry people in local newspapers blog?

The commentators on that website are mainly complete foaming right-wing tools, but a comedy story usually brings out the best in them.

Yeah, I've perused the angry people blog, most diverting.

The Yorkshire Evening Post once ran the headline "Minimum Fuss Over Gay Jesus".

Can I just say that I myself have been an 'Angry people in local newspapers'.

The experience is really rather surreal. The background was that a woman in our street was being a nuisance so a group of us got together a petition about her (long story). The local paper of course wanted to photograph us with the petition. I can remember the photographer barking instructions.

"Right stand round the petition, close together. Point at it. STOP SMILING YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ANGRY"

I was an Angry Person in a local newspaper once, too. I was ANGRY about the bus company banning kids from my school, so I leant on a bin next to a bus stop and looked Fed Up.

MK News has followed the DM's example quite nicely, with some nice Tory propaganda today:

We're in the money

Quote:
IT HAS emerged the leader of Milton Keynes Council has received almost £40,000 in allowances – on the day its cabinet met to decide spending cuts.

Local Evening News had an 'Injured Dog Fiasco'.
And... not a headline, but evocative nontheless, a report on the fire brigade being called out to address a minor incident 'in which an oven caught fire and a chicken was scorched'.

My local papers front page headline this week is and I shit you not...

STRANGER DANGER
: Prowler seen hanging about near schools in Grantham area.

With a no doubt dwindling readership, I have noticed my local paper becoming more sensationalist and increasingly more opinion orientated instead of just reporting news.

If only the Libyans could figure that one out.

They'd have Quadaffi doing a swift impression of Matilda.

(Was I the only one who thought of Harry Belafonte when the blatts were speculating that he'd gone Venezuela)??
