Epping attracts its far rightists. As if the BNP weren't enough, this chap turned up a few years ago.

Not forgetting Winston Churchill, MP for Epping during WW2. The BNP have tried hanging out at the Winston Churchill pub and covering their leaflets in pictures of the old soak in the hope that the extra stupid will make a connection between he and they.

Of course, neighbouring Chingford and Woodford have brought us Norman Tebbit and Iain Duncan Smith, while down the road you have Eric Pickles and 'Mr Romford' Andrew Rosindell. A charming bunch.

A friend of mine who works for the BBC says they have to, of course, follow the rules on electoral impartiality. This means that if they mention one of the three main parties' candidates they also have to mention the other two. Likewise, if they name a minority party candidate they have to mention any others.

There's one exception to this. The Ken & BoJo show is such a two horse race that the Lib Dems have been relegated to the minor parties.

I'm not sure whether this is specifically about Boris, but if he's involved, he's even more of a tosser than I gave him credit for...

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/04/the-campaign-for-clean-air.ars

Short version:
Quote:
The Campaign for Clean Air in London (CAL) has upped the ante in its assault on the London Mayor's office over the use of so-called dust suppressants: chemicals which can temporarily reduce airborne pollutants in localized pockets, presenting evidence that their use is targeted at air monitoring stations in what it brands "public health fraud on an industrial scale."

Be serious. Let's get back to the real issues. Ken Livingstone knows a bloke who's the mayor of a borough where the council don't want to shut a gay pub down.

Oh great. More easy good publicity for the mayor. Look what a nice guy he is, stopping that ad on the bus.

and another chance to print crap about Livingstone who of course wouldn't have done the same because Abu Qatada told him not to.

Famous last words.

Quote:
Boris Johnson, the Conservative London mayor, has insisted there will be no repeat of last summer's riots because the disturbances served as a "huge wake-up call to deal with the underlying causes".

Johnson, who is seeking re-election on 3 May, made the confident prediction in an online chat with parenting website Mumsnet, as he fielded questions on a range of issues, from the gap between London's rich and poor to the plight of those facing benefit cuts as a result of the welfare shakeup – and the taxing issue of the state of his hair.

Yes indeed.

Is the Winston Churchill pub round Debden?

The Winston Churchill - Oh noo.

I could never figure out where Loughton merged into Debden.
What I do remember is that the Skinheads from bots placed camped out in the beer garden during the summer of Botham's ashes.
Any other herberts walking past were guaranteed abuse or worse.
Alan Davies' documentary form last year confirmed that it wasn't just me and my mates.

The first review here suggests little has changed http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/co ... html/9544/

Aren't a lot of people in Debden from Bethnal Green?

I see the Evening Standard's stablemate has been talking up Siobhan Benita. Apparently she's 'getting London excited' with a whopping 2% in the polls. Definitely something fishy about this recent burst of publicity.

You've been reading Family and kinship in east London: the best thing conceived by Michael Young, by a long way. The Debden/Greenleigh estate was built in the 1950s so there are probably not many original E2ers left. It's mostly retired people now — I don't know if they're 'native' Debdeners (??) or have been shuffled in from elsewhere.

I briefly lived in Debden and had family there, but I never set foot in the Winston Churchill pub. There was a library over the road — much safer. I don't know where Debden merges into Loughton either, but then the suburbs of London can be like that.

I used to get a lot of stick for my Frenchie pronunciation of Theydon Bois, though!

Ooh good gag!

Do you know this place near Upshire?

I've done quite a bit of volunteering. Before Cameron rebranded it as Tory party policy.

What sort of person could believe in a conspiracy like that?

Er...

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/andre ... still-win/

Quote:
Can he come back? Well, I detect just the beginnings of a strategy to try to smuggle a Ken victory through second-preference votes. The hope is that the many Labour voters who dislike Livingstone can be persuaded to back the Greens’ Jenny Jones or the independent left-winger, Siobhan Benita, and then give Ken their second preference. This may be presented as “registering a protest” against Livingstone but is, in fact, worth precisely the same to him as giving him your first preference vote.

Because picking up second preferences is a really dodgy tactic. Might "smuggle" Livingstone over the line. Fuck off, Gilligan.

I know of it. Never been there, though. If I'm not mistaken, it's in the part of the forest where Tennyson lived and John Clare wrote some of his most brilliant verse. When I was there in the 80s it was a hangout for biker gangs.
